Title: Caudin-Connelly
Post by: pDim on Saturday 26 June 10 04:00 BST (UK)
I am wanting a look up or conformation of a family if possible?
I am after both Grandparents of Francois Caudin Connelly born 1801-1806 I think St Martin. Francois parents I believe were John Connelly and Francoise Caudin from St Martin I don't have birth dates but they were married in 1833. Can I have the parents of this couple? Appreciated thank you.

Hi

I was a little confused at first as I took the marriage date you gave as the marriage of John and Mary Connelly but later realised that this was the marriage of Francois Connelly - but it all came clear in the end.

The other thing is I think Caudin should read Gaudin - which is a common Jersey surname.

Anyway, the baptism of Francois Connelly took place in the Parish of St Martin on 26th Jan 1802. parents John Connelly and Francoise Gaudin.

The marriage of John took a while to find as it was one in the Parish of St Saviour. On 31st Aug 1798, Sergeant John Connelly of the Loyal Irish Fencibles married Francois (no "e") Gaudin of St Martin.

I think it safe to say that John Connelly didn't come from Jersey!

Looking back at possible baptisms for Francoise I can see one in the Parish of St Martin on 12th Jul 1778. Parents were Elie Gaudin and Marie Le Batard. If she is their daughter then they had two further children - Marie, baptised 17th Jan 1776 and Elie, baptised 16th Jun 1782.

Francois Connelly married Mary de St Croix on 23rd Mar 1833 in St Helier.

Thank you so much Stewart. All sound pretty right If Elie Gaudin is Francoise's father can you give me the names of Elie parents? so I can try and match up with the other St Martin Gaudin's. Was it Elie Gaudin b abt 1710 and Francoise Nicolle? Always understood John Connelly was Irish. Yes Francois did marry Mary de ste Croix.
Appreciated thank you.

I'm afraid it will have to wait until next week as the Archive Centre is now closed until Tuesday.

Hi

Thought I would call in the Societe library this morning and I think I have your answers.

Elie Gaudin married Marie Le Bastard (now has the letter "s") 4th Aug 1773 in St Martins.

The baptism of Elie in St Martin is 19th Jul 1741 to Elie and Francoise Nicolle. There were no other Elie baptisms between 1727 and 1756.

There is a baptism in St Martin for Elie Gaudin, son of George Gaudin and Anne de Queteville, 28th Jan 1712(3). There are no earlier Elie baptisms.

Elie Gaudin married Francoise Nicolle of St Saviour at St Saviour's Church, 14th Jun 1738.

George Gaudin of St Martin married Anne de Quettevill (no "e") of St Martin 20th Jan 1702 at Grouville Church.

Now, I have found a large family tree of the Gaudin's that has been donated to the Societe. When I say large, I mean large. There must be over a thousand names hand written on the tree going from 1540 to the 1920's. It's been donated by a lady from Derby. All of the dates I have given you I have checked against this tree.

Thank you so much Stewart for all your help. I think I have finally put the pieces together. Elie was the son of Phillipe Gaudin and Susan Valpy daughter of William and Marie de Quettevill.  I would love to obtain a photocopy of the family tree you speak of, would this be possible to purchase? Thank you so much again for all your effort.

Hi

I'm afraid this is pre-civil registration so you only have the baptism record to look at. There is no further information other than what I have already given you.

Interested in you queries re Eurassa (note correct spelling as recorded in original baptism records in Cornwall Registry) and Jean Connelly. They were my great great grandparents.
