I'm struggling with two schoolmasters in Chester.
They were Dr. Wingfield (or Winfield), and the Revd. M. Casson, and what I'm trying to find out is which school they taught at in the 1800-1820 period.
The Chester directories give a Revd. Mr. Winfield at the Academical Boarding School in Northgate Street in 1789, and a Revd. Casson at Barrs, Foregate Street in 1822, but details between those dates are elusive. Neither of them seems to be in the C of E lists.
Any information at all about these two would be very welcome.

Hello Henry7,
I think you will be lucky to find anything online for these gentlemen.
My suggestion would be to contact the Cheshire Record Office to see if they have any school records for these institutions that cover these periods.
The other place you could enquire of is the Chester History and Heritage Centre at St Michael's church. Tel 01244 402110. chh(at)cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk

Thanks, Jo.
I'm sure you are correct about the lack of online info. about these teachers, but I couldn't help wondering if someone else might have come across them somewhere.
I always feel more at home in a library or a record-office than blundering about on the web, so I'm very grateful for your suggested sources.
Harry.

When you say neither seems to be in CofE lists, do you mean the schools or the clergymen?

Hello Charlotte.
I tried looking for the Revs. Win(g)field and Casson in old lists on the Crockford's website, but couldn't find any likely ones.
This "Academical Boarding School" in Northgate Street might be the Grammar School, later The King's School, but I'm just guessing.
Harry.

Harry, the reason I asked about their denomonational allegiance was to suggest Crockford if appropriate :)
So you have covered that base.
Would the Chester Library have a Local studies Librarian who might be able to help you?

Hi Henry 7
Have you tried this database:
http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk/index.html
First click on Database, then click on Browse location, then choose Jurisdiction Location which will give you a huge choice of Diocese. Choose Chester. This will then bring up quite a few different categories among them - Parishes, Schools, Hospitals, Workhouse etc. There are a number of schools listed but I am unclear which school you may be looking for. Anyway, perhaps you may find what you are looking for amongst the information on this database.
Best Wishes

The Kings School is still open in Chester but now located out side of the town
May be an idea to check if they are on the net and email them I am sure they would have kept records and may be worth you emailing them or writting to them.
I found them on the web and they have got an archive section so i sent you the ling on pm. sry I have not worked out how to post a link on the forum yet
-
Thanks, Turnerchimes.
Yes, I had several tries at that one, but no trace of these two.
Harry.

This site gives some details of some clergymen but not all. There are several Wingfields and Cassons listed with dates of ordination and appointments:
http://eagle.cch.kcl.ac.uk:8080/cce/persons/
The date is too early for Crockfords to be of use in this case.

Leanora, thank you, and for the PM with the link.
Interesting stuff!
Harry.
-
Ainslie, thank you too. (What a lot of helpful people there are on Rootschat!)
I've checked all of the names on the CCE site, but my two aren't there - or don't seem to be. So I guess they weren't C of E.

Hello again,
The Wills database on the Cheshire Record Office site has an item for a Will of a Reverend Ferdinando Casson, Chester, dated 1838. It is such an unusual name I wonder if there is a connection to your Rev Casson?
The 1822/3 Directory, which is online, shows the Rev M Casson to be at The Commercial School, Barrs, Foregate St. This is also on the Cheshire RO site.
There is an entry for Rev Mr Winfield in 1789, he is at The Academical Boarding School, Northgate St then too.
I am sure that there would be something for these two establishments in either the RO, or the Chester History and Heritage Centre.

Im sure I read on the Kings school site that The Academical Boarding Schoolbecame the kings school
-
I wondered if it was anything to do with the Blue Coat School as that was in Northgate Street then. The buildings remain there to this day.

I'm sure i read something about the Bluecoat School also on the Kings school website under history and I used to go to a youth club there many years ago lol

Jo and Leanora -
Many thanks for your further efforts. These chaps are much harder to track down than I'd ever have believed.
"Ferdinando Casson" is a curious name!
Harry.

he sounds Spanish or Italian to me hmmmm , is there any possibility he was a Roman Catholic?
if so may be you have been looking at the wrong schools ,just a though
or have you the correct spelling of his name I though one of my family was Cussie but it turned out to be Cassie , after others on this site had a look at her name on my mother birth cert.
-
I know this is quite an oldie post, but I happened to see the "Ferdinando Casson" bit. there are several generations of Ferdinand/ Ferdinando Cassons in Westmorland/Cumbria, and most of them seem to be from one particular tree - think it's linked with Lewthwaits, or similar, where the first one pops up. Could be worth seeing if there are links there?
-
thank you for letting me know, I have not looked in to the family tree for a long time as my father became ill in 2010 was treated or depression for 5 months. they missed he had a very aggressive form of brain cancer and died . i was a difficult time as we did not get the help we needed to care for him.
it look its toll on my health and i recently had skin cancer . so i have not been able to do any more research. but thank you for the information
