Title: Barnaby/Pratt/Beattie in Gateshead
Post by: kittenkat on Tuesday 22 June 10 14:15 BST (UK)
This is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone had any info on some members of my family who ended up in Gateshead.  William Barnaby (b.1880 Metfield, Suffolk) and Charlotte Pratt (b. 1881 Smallburgh, Norfolk) were married in Gateshead in 1906, moved in to Rose Street Gateshead  and had four sons.  William Barnaby then died in 1926 in an accident at the local gas works where he worked.  Charlotte then went onto marry a local man, James Beattie who was Irish by birth.  I am hoping someone somewhere might have information to fill the gaps - for instance, I have no idea why they moved to Gateshead.  If we have common links in our tree, I would love to trade information and it would be good to hear from anyone who knows what kind of area Rose Street was, or who knows about the local gas works of that time.
Many thanks,
Kathy

a whole family of my mothers ancestors (4 brothers + 1 sister) moved from N.Norfolk to Tyneside in the mid 1800's. they were simply looking for work. I have read somewhere (think it was an old FH mag) that some companies actively encouraged migration to their area.

found this from a short history of Gateshead:

Gas
Gas supplies to Gateshead began in 1821 from a gasworks in Pipewellgate, built in 1819. At first, the gas was used only for lighting streets and houses, gas fires, refrigerators and cookers were luxuries of the future. In 1838, Gateshead Gas Company was taken over by the Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead Union Gas Light Company, who paid £5,000 for the Pipewellgate gas works, and so began a series of disputes about the prices charged north and south of the river. Gateshead paid ten pence per lamp per week (there were 250 compared with 6,752 today), but Newcastle only paid eight pence. When the mains were extended, Gateshead Council had to pay for the new lampposts and fittings whereas these were supplied free of charge in Newcastle. This favourable treatment of Newcastle was probably due to the fact that Newcastle Corporation had the power to establish its own gasworks. Although this never came about, the threat was frequently used to keep the company in line.

In 1876 the gasworks at Redheugh were opened on a 25-acre site at a cost of £100,000 and with additions, are still partially in use. The street lamps were lit by gas until 1948 when the gradual changeover to electricity began. One usually thinks of natural gas as a modern development. However, as early as 1840 there was a plan to supply Gateshead and Newcastle with natural gas from Wallsend Colliery, using the gas burnt off at the pit-head. The 'Spontaneous Gas Company' was formed but was short-lived and conventional means of supply were followed. Gas supplies were nationalised in 1948.

this gives some idea of the Gas works of the time.

"Redheugh Gas Works." Opened 1876 by Newcastle & Gateshead Gas Company.

Hi Kittykat

this is absolutely unbelievable...

My Great Grandmother was Charlotte Pratt born in Murton Village Durham but then lived in Rose Street Gateshead.

She had 6 sons, 1 born out of wedlock called George Pratt, she then had 5 sons to my great grandfather Barnaby, she then went on to marry James Beatie after my great grandfather Barnaby was killed in the gas works.

And one of her sons was my grandfather called William Thomas Barnaby.

give me a call on   Personal details removedWhat is so really fantastically strange is my daughters nickname is KittyKat. (

Hello Mac,

Thanks for getting in touch.  Sorry for not replying sooner, but I haven't checked this site in a while and have only just read your message.

I guess we're cousins of a sort - your grandfather William was the brother of my grandfather Sam (Samuel Robert Barnaby).  Did you know any of the brothers - Ratio, for instance?  Their mother Charlotte Pratt was born in Hunsett Mill, Smallburgh, Norfolk.  You should google it - it looks beautiful.  I can't believe that she left there to go to Gateshead, but sometimes life is like that!

Have you done the family tree or are you looking for info?  I haven't gone way back, but far enough on both the Pratt & Barnaby side to possibly be able to assist if you need any gaps filling in.   I'm trying to learn more about the personal side of their lives, as I don't really have any information about Charlotte or William other than recorded BMD & census facts.  My grandfather spoke very fondly of both his parents, but nothing in terms of their backgrounds or anything.  He also spoke about James Beattie, but in quite negative terms.  :-\

I'm so pleased you got in touch & am happy to share any info/memories.

Kathy

Hi Kathy

Sorry for the late reply, having a few problems at the moment.

My mother is the best person for you to speak to, for you to find out all you need to know, but she does not use the internet or a computer. It was her who actually gave me the previous information I sent you.
She is more than happy to talk to you if you wish to give her a call on .............. her name is ........................ (daughter of William "Billy" Barnaby, grand daughter of 'G/Grandma Beattie') she will also tell you about the brothers, Horatio, Sammy etc.

Hello,
My mother's father was Horatio Barnaby, son of Charlotte Barnaby and one of a number of brothers. His father died in the gas yards in Gateshead and his mother re-married a James Beattie.
I do believe we are related. I would love any information regarding the Barnaby side of the family, we too know of James Beattie as a bit of a brute but also that Charlotte had a bit of a soft spot for her son Horatio (my grandfather) who was born with polio leading to slight disfigurement. My mother has always wondered about the Norfolk aspect of her family, but also was told Charlotte Pratt had lived in London also? I would love any information that you have regarding their family history.
Many thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
I am your sort of cousin, twice removed or something!  I knew Great Uncle Ratio, as he was to me, being my Grandad Sam's brother.  Pleased to meet you  :)  Who is your mam - must be lovely Janice I'm guessing ? If so, tell her I am Kathy, Pat's daughter - she'll remember me.  Thanks for getting in touch.  I will be pleased to be in touch with you.  Personal details removed
