Title: Trying to find a Charles Clifford.
Post by: xxFlyspotxx on Tuesday 22 June 10 11:16 BST (UK)
Hi.....am trying to find the birth details, and names of his parents, for a Charles Clifford born Berkshire, Eng in 1805 and died 1897 in Windsor NSW Australia. He was a convict transported to Australia on the ship named the "Sesotris".
The only info I could find was  for a Charles born to parents Charles Clifford and Ann Steel but the info shows that this Charles died as an infant, so must be wrong..
Would appreciate any input.....Thankyou...xxFlyspotxx

There are a whole series of Charles Cliffords starting with  the first of my Australian line, who was transported for horse stealing.  He arrived in Oz in 1826 (birth: 1805, Berkshire, England, died: 1897, Windsor. Australia. Married: Louisa Westbrook at Richmond in 1885. They had ten children.

Hi Fly.. the above Charles, is the grandfather of Oscar (other topics) is that right ?

Cheers

"Charles CLIFFORD born 27 Jul 1805"

The latter - does seem to be from an extracted record in the IGI, though a year out:
Charles CLIFFORD, son of WIlliam CLIFFORD & Ann STEELE
born 20 JUL 1806  & Christened  27 JUL 1806   Appleford, Berkshire, England
Death:  27 JAN 1810

Ambly...yes he is the grandfather of Oscar.....have looked for days in UK sites for more info on Charles but not getting anywhere.....there doesn't seem to be anyone of that name close enough to his birthdate.....this family is sure a challenge....
That photo from Tassie is not him

have just checked the Appleford PRs (courtesy of the Oxfordshire Family History Society) and can confirm the following:

baptism of

Charles Clifford, 27 July 1806, parents Charles & Ann, labourer, wife Steele (i.e her maiden name).

However, there is also a burial record of Charles Clifford, 27 Jan 1810, aged 3, fever.

This may be the one that you have already found.

yes KN....thankyou...but it can't be the Charles I am after if he died at 3., as my great grandfather died in Australia at a ripe old age..
I was excited when I found that info but then it hit me that the Charles had died young on that find...so its back to the search again

I believe Charles Clifford was the brother of Rachel and Ann Clifford, also of East Hendred, Berkshire. Ann was born in 1808 and married John Wiltshire in about 1829. The family was Catholic, like many people in East Hendred protected by the recusant Eyston family. Charles may have become Anglican in Australia, but we would like to know if there is any Catholicism in your family. The Australian descendants of Ann Clifford are both Catholic and Anglican. Ann Clifford Wiltshire's daughter Emma married John Butler of Upton and they emigrated to Queensland in 1858. The descendants of this family had the surnames Butler, Archer, Farnie, Gapps, Gibb, Dean by 1910, and live mainly in NSW and Queensland. Geoff
