Title: Archibald McQueen Isle of Skye
Post by: Aussie1947 on Tuesday 22 June 10 01:07 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm trying to follow up on any information especially births and a marriage for Archibald Mcqueen whom immigrated to Australia on the Midlothian in 1837 along with his wife Christina and children Neil 2 and Mary 4.

Archibald would have been born around 1812 and Christina 1817 somewhere on Skye.

Christina's maiden name could have been Ross

Archibald could have been born in Portree ( I have seen this written but not confirmed)

Archibald died at Copeland NSW 1890 and Christina at Copeland in 1895

any assistance would be appreciated.

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

My ancestors (Donald McLean and Catherine Ross) were also on the "Midlothian".  Donald was from Bracadale on Skye.  Have you seen the Inverness Emigrant Index?  It lists Archibald as "known in Portree".

If Portree is anything like Bracadale, the parish records are very incomplete.  Not much help, but you have my sympathy.

Thanks Jacqui,

Nice to hear that your ancestors also came out on the Midlothian, did they end up moving to Dumore near Paterson on the Hunter along with many other Highlanders?

Thanks for the Index, this adds to the possibility that Archibald came from Portree.

Regards

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

They were on the Hunter for a while but then moved up to the Tooloom goldfields in northern NSW.

Good luck with your research.
