Title: How to find a death
Post by: Brie on Monday 21 June 10 13:34 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm looking for the death of someone who may have died in Australia, probably in the 1950s.

I know this is extremely vague. However, is there anything similar to GB's freebmd site in Australia that I could seach?

Thank-you
Brie

Hi Brie
If the death occurred in NSW you could have a search here

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births

Other states are a bit harder I think.

Thanks again

The Australian Resources board has a lot of links : (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,399.0.html )
The range of years covered depends on where you're searching (e.g. Queensland's site goes up to 1964 for deaths, NSW goes up to 1979).

If you can trace them at all in Australia (immigration, electoral rolls, etc) that will make your job a lot easier.

There is also The Ryerson Index, which is a listing of newspaper death notices & obituaries. It covers most of NSW & some other states papers as well. Worth a look.

You could try this site to look for death notices (newspapers) - up to 1954.

I also ask if you would like to give us a name.  We may be able to locate  your person of interest on the electoral rolls.

Deaths in the state South Australia are not online but many of us have resources to help you.

It would also be helpful to identify him in the indexes to have his parents names ;D

Nothing South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland or Victoria.  Tasmanian deaths only extend to 1930.  You have checked NSW yourself.

Are you sure he emigrated to Australia?

Thank-you,

Well that narrows it down - he must have died somewhere  :)

His father was Harlow Irwin, his mother Helen (or variations on the name) Capper.
