I am trying to locate a marriage between Thomas Townsend b1825 Newnham Murren, Berkshire/Oxford and Mary Stiggants b.1837 Wickham, Hampshire.
Their children are Harriett b1860 IoWight, Charles b1863 Fareham, William b1865 Portsmouth and Henry b1866.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

Have you checked freebmd which is the website we all use for BMD lookups post-1837

I have but nothing for Thomas and Mary marrying
-
Did you get her maiden name from one of their childrens birth certs?
-
Yes, I got her name from my Great Grandfather's birth certificate.
-
I think Mary is indexed as Steggants in 1851 - parents Richard & Ann
Now this is were I wonder about a marriage pre-1861 as there is a Mary Stigants unmarried servant on the 1861 census
In both cases - birthyear was 1838 and birthplace was Wickham
In 1871 - the family are in Sussex and the eldest child is 6yr old William. Charles is not with the family in 1871 buy re-appears in 1881 but no Harriet on either 1871 or 1881
William, Charles and Henry were all baptised on 25.8.1867 in Hampshire per IGI and mum is shown as Mary Ann
Like yourself - I cannot find any marriage for them
Which of the 3 boys is your great grandfather
-
Mary's parents are Richard and Ann.
You will find Charles staying in 1871 with the Steggants family as grandson. He is transcribed as Lowmand for some reason.
Charles Townsend b1863 Fareham is my Great Grandfather.

The Isle of Wight FHS have an excellent index for BMD, but Harriet does not show up on it at all. Neither does a possible marriage for Thomas and Mary Ann. :-\
Where did you find the information that Harriet was born on the Isle of Wight? I can find nothing on FreeBMD or the IOW index.

1891 Census RG12, piece 1317, folio 53, page 16
I did not find Harriett at all until 1891 so I wonder just whose daughter she is really!!!
-
Shown as married daughter Harriett E Collins
-
That's right.
Its killing me trying to find the marriage of Mary Stiggants/Steggants to Thomas Townsend though.
-
They may never have married
Have you looked for Harriett Collins on the 1901/1911 to determine her husbands name which will help find their marriage to see what name she married as
I have a feeling she is possibly an illegitimate daughter
-
Harriet married Joseph Collins Q2 1890 Reading v2c p688.
In 1901 they were living at 6 Dunmow Rd West Ham. Incidentally the 1901 says
Harriet was B in West Ham unlike the 1891 which says Sandown IOW
-
The two marriage with that reference - both the brides are Harriet so it is not necessarily conclusive.
I've checked for St* and To* births on the Isle of Wight 1859-61 and there aren't any. :-\ The closest I have found is Sinnett or Stanney
There may be more to this than meets the eye.

The 1890 marriage is on the IGI pilot website - Harriet's father was William Townsend- not Thomas
