Does anyone know if Weston Wharf,Baschurch was a residential area of Baschurch in the late 1890's or was it an actual wharf on the Shropshire Ship Canal? My grandmother's birth cert. lists her place of birth as Weston Wharf. Trying to figure out if they were canal people.

hi roma,
westonwharf was a canal terminal which was 2 miles north of baschurch This canal was originally planned to come nearer but work stopped as the railways started to take the business from the canals.
hope this helps

So if someone's birthplace is listed as Weston Wharf back in the late 1890's, does that mean they were canal people or were there houses there or just businesses?

Just come across this thread a copy of the birth cert will show the fathers occupation. & i have some records in my collection for the Flowers boatmen so its a strong possability on a connection with the canals

Thanks for your post, Jane. The father is listed as an agricultural labourer. I know he often worked on various farms in the area but I also questioned if the family may have been living on the canal at times. In the interim I've learned that there were cottages for farm help in the hamlet known as Weston Wharf so it appears they were not a canal family after all.
