Hi, the Woods are my ancestors. It may be coincidence but one of John & Mary's sons, William Wood married a Jane Duncan in 1872, who was the daughter of Arthur & Jane (nee Duguid) Duncan. One of the witnesses on the certificate was a George Duncan.  Jane did have a brother George, who was born c1842 in Meldrum. I found them in the 1851 census. In 1881 George was living in Aberdour parish. Do n't know if he's your great grandfather but could be? William Duncan could be a nephew of John & Mary's daughter in law which may explain why he's shown as a boarder & not a direct relative.
Regards,

Try & find George in the 1871 census. You know his occupation (in 1878 anyway),you'll also see his place of birth. The George Duncan in 1881 census was a salmon fisher & shoemaker.George may have remarried by 1881,if not he'll show up in the census as a widower. If you do find a likely married man, check out his marriage certificate as it will state if he was a widower.Likewise a death certificate will list his first wife as well as any others. Also, have you checked out the school admission rolls? When William started school his address & name of guardian or parent will have been entered as well as his date of birth.Did you find him in the 1891 census? If he left the area, the name of his next school will be mentioned. It's a good way of tracing families between censuses!.Just noticed that your Grandfather's place of birth was recorded in 1881 census as Aberdour?

You need to contact Old Aberdeen House regarding archives for schools. Please click on this link. You can make an appointment & spend some time there poring over the records.I've been a few times & thoroughly enjoyed it. They allow you to take photos of the books (saves a lot of writing).

Which George Duncan's death certificate have you got? Is it the one who was living by himself in 1881? Please give us some more details to enable us to help you.

The death certificate confirms my hunch that he was indeed the brother of Jane Wood.
What about finding any other George Duncans in the 1871 census. Was Jessie buried in Lambert & did her grave have a headstone? I think the school admission rolls may be the best line of enquiry.

While you're in Old Aberdeen remember to check the poor relief index for any sign of applications for the upkeep of your grandfather. The parishes his parents belonged to would be liable to look after him.
