Hi Gaye
Have had a look at the 41/51/61 census for the combination of people that you mention - William Tantrim Thornton b 1810??? Emily nee Carpenter and son George William Thornton b 1835 Ludlow I could'nt find anything using this name combination so decided to drop the Thornton and use the surname Tantrim instead and have found this:- IGI George Tantrum Christenened 17th Dec 1832 Ludlow Shropshire, parents William Tantrum and Sarah.
Looked them up in the census and found this in the 1841 census:- Piece 430 Folio 3 Pg 2- Township: Farlow Civil Parish: Stottesdon County: Herefordshire - consulted Genuki - Stottesdon, Shropshire a parish mainly in the Cleobury division of Stottesdon Hundred, county Salop etc
William Tantram b 1806 Herefordshire Sawyer
Sarah Tantram b 1811 Herefordfordshire
William Tantram b 1829 Herefordshire
James Tantram b 1834 Herefordshire
George Tantram b 1837 Herefordshire
Richard Tantram b 1841 Herefordshire
Could be something and nothing, and I realise it doesn't match your critera exactly but thought it might be worth a mention.
All the best

Many thanks for thinking outside the square with this Z...
and there just may be something in it.
There's an old family anecdote that George Thornton did change his name from Tantrim having jumped ship in New Zealand....not verified of course. His death certificate here in NZ shows the parents info and his age and place of birth - this info would have been provided by his adult children as his wife had died and he had no other family here. His marriage cert 1867 Auckland NZ doesn't provide any info on his parents unfortunately, and shows 'full age' so doesn't help with determining his correct age.
The Tantrim/Tantram line is definitely worth keeping on the back burner for now.

Hi
Now digging a bit deeper into the TANTRAM (sp?) family name and would
very much appreciate some info on : -
Thomas Tantrum b. abt 1795 Burford, Farmer (son of Thomas & Jane)
wife Catherine (nee Allen) b.abt 1807???
One known child:
Caroline b.1833 Burford m.1854 to George Bradley
Crossed fingers for some moe family members to get a foothold on this branch!

Hi Gaye
you will be aware that a George William Thornton who died in 1924 aged 88yrs (which ties into birth date of abt 1835) married Margaret who died in 1920. Their daughter Clara Jane born 1875 married Henry Lucas in 1896 and they were living in Waihi in 1898. Henry died in 1906 aged 36 yrs.
There may have been a child who died in 1903. Do you know what happened to Clara?
-
Hi Henry
Sorry to say I have nothing on Clara Jane other than what you have.
How are you connected?
Best regards

Hi Gaye, Clara Jane Lucas (nee Thornton) was my great great aunt by her marriage to Henry Lucas,
There is a extract from the "Thames Star" of May 1899 about Clara helping a friend who was dying from typhoid.

Reactivating this twig as I've had some contact with another seeker of the Tantrum/Thornton merge in New Zealand
Could someone please find the family of
Edwin Tantrum b.1841 or 1849 Ludlow in 41-61 Census
He married Sept 1871 Mary Banks in Ludlow
Fingers crossed here!
-
Hiya Gaye ...I can give you both fathers of Edwin and Mary and a little bit of info
5th september 1871 ,Ludlow
Edwin Tantrum aged 22 -b 1849 - fathers name William Tantrum
Mary Banks aged 19 - b 1852 - fathers name James Banks
did you have this info ? - if not , at least you know their birth years and fathers ...might make it easier to find them in census returns

Found baptism
Edwin Tantrum bapt 12th april 1849 Ludlow - parents William Tantrum and Susan
sister
Elizabeth Tantrum 2nd may 1854 - same parents - Ludlow ,Shropshire
can`t find any more unless they moved to Wistanston ,Shropshire
so 1861 census should have
William Tantrum
Susan Tantrum
Edwin Tantrum aged 11
Elizabeth Tantrum aged 6
and possibly other children
1848 in Ludlow , William Tantrum married Susanna Jones ..... on freebmd ...so I would presume Susanna Jones was Edwins mother
-
a baptism for a William Tantrum in Ludlow
14th march 1835 parents Thomas Tantrum and Sarah
too young ( I presume aged 14 ) to be Edwins father - but just to let you know there is another William Tantrum b Ludlow as well as Edwins father ...of course ...he may have been 4 -6 years old when he was baptised ?? and might be Edwins father ...oh the joys of research ...lol
allan
ADDED...William Tantrum AGED 6 IN 1841census in St Lawrence Parish of Ludlow ...so not Edwins father
-
Oooh some snippets of good info there thank you so much.
Is it possible to give me the family of the other William Tantrum in 1841 Census?
May just end up being related......
-
Additionally, I have been told by another interested researcher that Edwin's siblings are: -
Sarah 1851
Elizabeth 1854
James 1856
Hannah 1860
Hope this helps finding the family in 1861 Census.....??

James and Hannah are both baptised in Wistanston ? parents are also William and Susan ?...so they may be your Williams - but also - it may be another totally different William and Susan ?...if you find William and Susan in 1861 census WITH Edwin / Elizabeth /James /Hannah all together ,you will confirm James and Hannah as being another 2 children

Sarah Tantum age 10 born Ludlow
Elizabeth Tantum age 7 born Ludlow
James Tantum age 4 born Wistanton

Richard Rudge Lodger age 55 born Maidley Montgomeryshire
To Clarify my post re Edwin , In 1861 he's with a William Price, a farmer ,and family and other servants in Westhope
-
OK now this is all very interesting and because of William's age in 1861 - which is 58 years
and he's a lot older than his wife Susannah; I'm thinking he had been married and widowed before.
Can we find an earlier marriage and first family for him?
Specifically we are wanting to locate him in 1841 Census with wife/family.
:)

I am not saying this is your William - but write it down in case
William Tantrum to Ann Davies 5th May 1834 at Much Wenlock,Shropshire
