Title: ELLIS family of Bilston/Wolverhampton
Post by: Nickie Stone on Monday 14 June 10 11:46 BST (UK)
Hi

This is what I have so far:

James ELLIS b 1845 Garside, Sunderland   -  who married  Mary TART b 1845 Pensnett.

Their children were:

Nebo b 1871
Albert Thomas b 1872
Lavinia (might also be known as Dinah) b 13.01.1875 at 7 Priestfield, Bilston
Naomi b 27.12.1876 at 95 John St, Bilston
Talitha Cumi b 1880
Hosea.

Albert Thomas married Selina Bond.  These are my great grandparents.

From what we know Naomi was possibly living in London in the 1920's/early 1930's.  We also think that Lavinia moved to the Manchester area as her brother Hosea was in the Salford area.

Talitha Cumi married James Steadman.

We've literally hit a dead end with these people, so any help as to where to turn to next would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Nickie

Hiya Nickie

Your going to have to expand a bit on what help you need ie census/BMD/descendants or do you want to work backwards from James Ellis?

Give us a clue!

Hi Willow

I'm actually trying to find out about the children of James and Mary.  I've got details about the families of both James and Mary, it's their children who are proving a bit elusive.

We've found out the details on the 1891 census:
Hosea 22, Nebo 20, Albert 18 and Lavinia 16 were all living with their grandfather Edwin Tart who was a widower.

In 1871 they were living at 86 Wolverhampton Road, Bilston,
In 1881, George Street, Bilson
In 1891 they were living in the St George's area of Wolverhampton.

Referring to Lavinia possibly known as Dinah - it might be a long shot, but there was a lady always referred to as aunt Dinah and we think it was Lavinia - she might not have liked her own name - it could have been her middle name or it could be just a favourite old lady that the family knew.  I'm thinking that we probably will never know.

Thanks
Nickie

Dinah wasn't Lavinia's middle name -her middle name was Tart!!! I don't think you would refer to her as "Aunt Tart"!!!!

Is the information posted so far -new to you??

Have you checked freeBMD for marriages , deaths

Bear in mind some of the birth reg's are in the name of "Elliss" instead of "Ellis" -so you will have to check both spellings

Yes thank you, this information is new - and a bit overwhelming.

I think Dinah might be a red herring, but someone was always referred to as aunt Dinah.  Would children have been told to call a friendly neighbour "aunt" like they sometimes do these days?  I had two aunties that were no relation at all, so I'm guessing that this could be the case here.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for all your help yesterday.

We think we might have found the marriage for Lavinia Tart Ellis to a John Slater from Mansfield.  Just checking it out now.  Only leaves Naomi uncounted for in the marriage stakes.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this thread. I am descended from Mary Tart, James Ellis's wife. Mary had a son before her marriage to James, Ezra Tart. He was baptised, along with his half brother Hosea Tart Ellis, 23 October 1870 Bilston High Street Primative. They were resident in Priestfield Bilston. ( ref Freereg.org.uk). Mary and James were married at St Peters Wolverhampton 2 Jun 1868 (also freereg.)
In the 1871 census Mary, James, Ezra, Hosea Tart and Nebo were res with Mary's parents. RG10 Piece 2952 Folio 80 Page 17.
In the 1881 census Ezra and Hosea were still res with their grandparents RG11 Piece 2805 Folio 105.
I have more details if you want, also contacts through GRunited.

Hosea Tart Ellis m. Amelia Cartwright jun 1892 Wton 6b 959
Nebo m. Mary Ann Rice sep 1894 Wton 6b 898
Albert Thomas m. Selina Bond Wton Dec 1891
Talitha Cumi m. James Richard Steadman jun 1900 Wton 6b 965

Found Naomi and Samuel Morris in the 1901 and 1911 census with son Thomas (1900),
Just can't find a marriage for them though.
Mill Street, Bilston
RG13 2691 49 21
RG14PN17125 RG78PN1054 RD369 SD7 ED14 SN299

This may be Naomi Ellis, Bilston is the right area for the families.

Found a marriage for Samuel Morris and Naomi Lewis 27 Mar 1898 Ettingshall Staffs
Dudley 6c 55 1898 Mar
Could there have been a mistake with Naomi's maiden name or is this just wishful thinking.

Hi I think I might have some useful information for you about the Ellis family.  My mother and her sister are the surviving grand children of Tolitha Cumi and James Steadman, there was another sister and a brother now sadly passed away.  My Mother and Aunt still live in the Wolverhampton area. Tolitha Cumi died in the 1970s She lived for many years in Blakenhall , Wolverhampton, James died before the second world war having been in the boar war and 1st war.   Aunt Dinah (Lavinia) did exist we visited her a few times when we were children  She lived in Waterfoot near Manchester Her surname then was Cartwright and she was a widow.  My late Aunt used to visit Jim Ellis and his family in Coventry until their deaths and his Sister Florence emigrated to Australia with her husband Lou and their children.  Jim and Florence were the children of Nebo jnr. Nebo snr  died during the bombing of Coventry the family were bombed out twice during the blitz and walked to wolverhampton with a young baby to seek refuge Hope this was of interest i think i have it right

Hi All,

I too have a connection with this family.  My Great Grandmother was Mary Ann Bond (b. 1878), her sister was Selina Ellis (nee Bond).

Mary Ann Bond married William Robbins in 1903 in Wolverhampton.

If anyone wants more info or has more info to share please shout  ;D

Jool

PS.  Here's a link to one of my previous posts showing a group photo with William Robbins front centre.  I don't know who the other people are, could even be some of the Bond family  ???

Hi Jool and kidles

Firstly, Jool - Thanks for getting in touch, I've PM'd you.

Secondly, kidles, welcome to RootsChat.  If you make two more posts on this board then we can PM each other as well.

I'm pleased that you have settled the fact that Aunt Dinah was indeed Lavinia after all, it's something that has been bothering us for a while.

I'm related to you through Albert Thomas Ellis who was Talitha Cumi's brother.  Albert was my great grandfather, he married Selina Bond, whose sister Mary Ann is Jool's great grandmother.

Hi all

More info for you about Tolitha Cumi and James Steadman they had two children Florence (Gibbons) born about 1900 died during the war and Harold similar birth date he must have died in the late 1980s I believe his widow is still alive.  My mother Vera Brenda her sisters Joan and Beryl and their brother Leonard are the children of Florence.  It seems Aunt Dinah (Lavinia) had a cafe in Prestatyn Wales prior to living in Waterfoot if this is any help to tracing her my Mother thinks she may have married twice

Thank you so much for all the info you have provided us with.

It now just seems that Naomi is the only child from James Ellis and Mary Tart that is unaccounted for, but I'm sure she'll turn up one day when we're least expecting to find her.
