Could anyone tell me how to go about obtaining a copy birth certificate from Lima?
The birth would have been about 1940s

Was the person British or peruvian?

Use findmypast indexes ( they are free during world cup?) and order from the GRO.

The birth will probably also have been registered in Peru.  This is the peruvian civil registration department:

Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil

Click on the first box [portal institucional].  At he top of the page, click on “Consultas RENIEC.”  You can send them an inquiry.
