Title: 1890 death record help please
Post by: colliehouse on Friday 11 June 10 18:05 BST (UK)
Hi, If anyone is going to the records office and has a few minutes spare I am wondering if you could take a look at a death record for me and hopefully decipher what it says.
I am looking at Marion Mathieson Marshall died 4 Sept 1890 (statutory Deaths 670/00 0034)
The bits I can't read are the address where she died, it is 'something' Close, Queensferry. Also the Maiden Surname of her mother.

Many thanks
Sally

Hi Sally

There are two other ways that would help to find what the bits are that you cannot read (sometimes writing is awful or too faint to read!).

You can post on here the sections that you are having a problem with (you can only post the relevant sections, not the whole image due to copyright issues).

Alternatively, this is not an uncommon problem due to imageing of certificates. You can contact SP on this link www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/contactus/form.aspx?issue=24 and if you explain to them what sections you are having a problem with, they will send you via email an enhanced image which very often helps. They respond really quickly to these types of enquiries.

Thank you Monica,

I will contact Scotland's People right away. I think an enhanced image would solve the problem.

I'd say the mother's maiden surname is Fairley - see death date Sept Fourth - the F seems to be the same as the first letter of the surname.  Not sure of place name, will keep looking

Thank you AnnieB

Fairley was one of my possibilities and you may well be right. I thought the 4th letter might be an 's' but now I look closer again it doesn't look like the 's' in deceased.

Thank you both very much indeed, your suggestions were spot on. I received a reply from Scotlands People today confirming that the maiden surname was Fairley and the address was Knox's Close. Aren't Scotlands People great! They are so helpful, so much better than trying to access records in England.
