Title: WW1 War Graves Desecrated Overnight.
Post by: Romilly on Friday 11 June 10 15:01 BST (UK)
Just saw this report on 'Sky News'

Romilly:-(

Tim Hewage, Sky News Online
'A British World War I cemetery in northeastern France's Pas-de-Calais region has been desecrated.

Vandals daubed 12 soldiers' graves with pink swastikas and other Nazi signs.

The cemetery in the town of Loos-en-Gohelle holds the remains of British and Canadian soldiers who died while fighting in an October 1915 battle there.

The graves are all believed to have been vandalised overnight.

France's minister for veterans, Hubert Falco slammed the actions as "an insult to the memory" of the soldiers and an "insult to France."

More to follow'...

Such a pity.  :'( Why cant these idiots just respect these poor guys.  If someone catches them perhaps they could tar and feather them so they feel embarassed!  ;D

Disgusting behaviour. Completely abhorrent and sickening.

That's all I have to say on this one!

So it would appear that other countries also produce vile kids.

Their own ancestors who fought in the war, no matter which side, would be  appalled at this mindless behaviour.

I agree with many of the comment, but I think the saddest part of it is that, unless they really are committed facists, the chances are these are teenagers who did this 'for a laugh' and have no understanding whatsoever of the significance of what they have done.
Yes, it is awful, but if the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are responsible for the site you can be sure that the damage will be repaired very quickly.
They don't represent their whole generation though.   For the teenagers who have been brought up without any knowledge or understanding of history and how they came to grow up in a free country, look at the increasing numbers of teenagers standing at the Menin Gate in the evenings, or those who stand in silence in Wootton Basset.
When I sell poppies in November it's hard to guess in advance.  Sometimes it's the fresh faced smart youngsters who walk past and ignore me, whilst the Burberry badged trainer brigade come up and buy the poppies.
Rather than tar and feather, I'd prefer to see someone get through to them about what they have done - because once they understand, they will have to live with the knowledge.

I won't write down what I think as I'll be thrown off the site!!!  >:( >:( >:(

I agree with you about not labelling all youngsters with the same stain.  I might hold off the tarring and feathering until you have tried lecturing them....

No polite words can describe what I'm thinking right now.

A few years ago some teens were photographed urinating on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa, Canada.  The Canadian Legion was a lot more forgiving than I would be.  Offering an indignity to a body is a crime, and the aggravating circumstances in a war cemetery are at the high end.

Here's a link to the Canadian story:

Good to see that the French authorities are taking this very seriously, & that President Sarkozy has written to the Queen expressing his concern.
