I am trying to find out more about the Land family of Middleton Stoney from the detail in William Land's will of 1815.
The only solid detail I have is that Kitty Land married Peesley (!) Adkins in 1772. They subsequently had a daughter Elizabeth who married Joseph James Dallaway in London in 1797. Their daughter Mary was the main beneficiary of the will.
Sarah Land first married Edward Tanner in 1781, and then remarried Solomon Bowerman in 1791. Sarah was William & Kitty's half-sister, so may have been quite a bit younger
So I am guessing William born 1740-50, Kitty c 1750, Sarah c. 1760-5.
Am happy to learn more of that family or earlier Lands in Middleton Stoney. It seems that William exchanged their estate in Middleton Stoney for an estate in Chesterton with the Earl of Jersey - in case that has any relevance.
Fingers crossed!

Hi Peter,
I've gone through the Oxfordshire Marriage Index and have listed below the LAND marriages in Middleton Stoney and at other places where the LAND is recorded as "of Middleston Stoney"
Marriages at Middleton Stoney -
1599 Oct 14 - LANDE Richard / PALMER Maria
1694 Mar 19 - LAND Mary / JONES Richard
1696 Aug 6 - LAND Daniel / LAND Rose (widow)
1704 May 5 - LAND Martha / CONEY Anthony (farmer)

Marriages at OX St MaryMag -

Bev,
Thank you very much. I really think that gives me what I need.
From the more reliable bits of IGI/LDS, I have:
SARAH LAND Christening: 25 APR 1761 Deddington, Oxford, England
Father: RICHARD LAND Mother: SARAH
Kitty Adkins called her daughter, Elizabeth, I am guessing after her mother
So it would looks as though I have:
1743 23 Nov - LAND Richard of Mid. Stoney / ROBBINS Elizabeth of Bucknell at St Mary Magdalene, Oxford
1756 Jul .. - LAND Richard of Mid. Stoney / STILGOE Sarah at Deddington
which fits pretty well with the little indication I have of ages for William and Kitty Land
I was tempted to tie in
1761 Mar 14 - LAND Richard (widow) / HUNT Elizabeth at Middleton Stoney
as a third wife, but there is a bit of a time conflict with Sarah's birth (if that is right). Unless the new wife said 'it is about time you had that child christened'? On the other hand just how many Richard Lands at Middleton Stoney might there be?
Thanks for all your trouble

It would appear that Richard LAND did marry Elizabeth HUNT in 1761. In his will dated 4 July 1789 (proved 19 March 1790) he names his wife as Elizabeth. He also names sons Richard, John and William and daughters Joan LAND, Martha LAND and Kitty ADKINS. [Oxfordshire Record Office Ref: 217.261]
He seems to have had at least four children by his first wife Elizabeth ROBBINS who he married in 1743. These were Anne, Elizabeth, Kitty and William who were all named as grandchildren of William ROBINS farrier of Middleton Stoney, late of Bucknell, in his will dated 31 August 1750. All the children were described as minors, i.e. under 21 years of age [Oxfordshire Record Office Ref: 213.433]
Richard LAND appears to be the son of Richard LAND and Ann KNIGHT who married in Middleton Stoney in December 1710. This Richard also left a will dated 10 April 1742 in which he named his wife Ann and his three children - Richard, Katherine PYBUS and Elizabeth BOTTRELL [Oxfordshire Record Office Ref: 211.38]
Finally, Richard LAND is also mentioned as the brother in law of William PYBUS, gentleman of Hethe, in his will dated 11 August 1789. This William also names his sister in law as Elizabeth BOTTERELL [Oxfordshire Record Office Ref: 100.188]
To tie it all up together you really need the parish register entries from Middleton Stoney. Perhaps another Rootschatter can help you there.

LOL, that's like asking how long is a piece of string :)
In one small village I found 3 William MILES all married to Mary's. It was a nightmare sorting through the baptisms of the children and placing them with the correct parents ::)
As Orpheus mentioned, you need the Parish Registers. Unfortunately I don't have the PR cd for Middleston Stoney.

What treasure you bring back from the underworld! Many thanks.
It seems odd that Richard Land does not mention his daughter Sarah (by Sarah Stilgoe) in his will. Perhaps she had run off with Edward Tanner, so was estranged from her father.
I wonder if the other children all died young, so were no longer alive or had children when William Land makes his will in 1814. Or just more estrangements.
You have given me a lot to work on!

I may need your help again. Where is your source for these wills? TNA has only William's (1815) and an earlier Richard LAND of Middleton (1642).
I have bought a copy of the parish registers for Middleton Stoney, which has enabled me to piece together a lot of the LAND family tree. However, there is a gap of about 20 years where the vicar fails to record the parents of the children being baptised, so I have about five LAND children without immediate parents. I know that they are children of either an Anthony LAND or of John and Joan LAND. I was hoping their wills might shed some light.
My last puzzle is over the BOTTERELL connection: the 1742 will mentions Elizabeth BOTTERELL, but the only marriage I can find (as noted by Bev) is Elizabeth LAND marrying William BOTTERELL of Ambroseden on 22nd April 1767 - after the will! That doesn't prevent the earlier Elizabeth LAND from marrying a different BOTTERELL
Any thoughts?

Hello Peter
The wills mentioned in my previous post are all held at the Oxfordshire Record Office and I have quoted the reference number of each in brackets. Information regarded those persons mentioned in each will came from a series of booklets published by The Eureka Partnership ( http://eurekapartnership.com ). If you would like to obtain copies of any of the wills you should contact Oxfordshire Record Office at http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oro As well as those wills I mentioned the Oxfordshire Record Office also has the will of John LAND, gent of Middleton Stoney, dated 1809 (Ref: 220.200). There may be others of an earlier date but the Index volume I have does not commence until 1733. The Oxfordshire Record Office should be able to tell you whether there are any wills prior to this date.
I also found the BOTTERELL connection confusing. All I can say is that there may have been an earlier Elizabeth LAND who married a BOTTERELL. Perhaps Bev might be able to find a possible marriage.

Thank you - I think I have seen similar lists which detail the beneficiaries, the gifts, and the relationships. The detail you gave made me think you had the actual wills. I will follow up on the links. I may even treat it as an excuse to go over to Oxford - they have a real tennis court too.
However, I can see the advantages of such a list: I got the 1642 will of Richard Land - it took me an age to decipher the script - and it was only one paragraph (no lawyers involved!).

Hi,
I have looked through all BOTTERELL (various spellings) marriages in Oxfordshire, and only found one to an Elizabeth before 1742
1711 Apr 4 at OX St Aldate
BOTTRELL John of Kirtlington / SCOTT Elizabeth of Kirtllington
There are no other LAND / BOTTERELL marriages recorded in Oxfordshire.
There are only 19 female LAND and 17 male LAND(E) marriages in the 1538 to 1837 index. Perhaps you would find something in another county.

Thanks for looking. The relevant Elizabeth LAND was born in 1713, so no chance of it being a second or third marriage - like the Sarah LAND/TANNER/BOWERMAN before.
It may have to remain a mystery for the moment. I have tried various checks on IGI (not always reliable) but no hints either.

Sorry - another request: do you have info on the Will of William PYBUS in 1789? I wondered if he and Catherine LAND had children.
Thanks in anticipation

Hello Peter
There is no mention of children in William's will but that does not necessarily mean that he didn't have any. Sometimes testators refer to their wife and/or children in a general sense without naming them, in which case they do not appear in a name index.
Sorry not to be able to help further.
