Can I ask a question. How do you know the write spellin of surnames. Should you use the spelling you find or ther other one family said. I have seen this spelling before. I have been corrected before that there is no george in his name but I think there may be. Thank you again.

I would think that the person taking the details has written the name as it 'sounded'. You would need to see a certificate to see if they were illiterate and signed with a mark, usually a cross. If you wish to purchase an image of a certificate you must use the spelling on the index as it is transcribed.
May I ask where you found the information about your ancestors? Was it from an online tree? Perhaps he used the name George as a nickname.
How did the later generations of this family spell their surname?
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Cheers

On the Intrinsie ship list the is a Catherine Conwy 24 could this be Bridget Conway sister.

-
Biddy/Bridget CONWAY was from County Sligo in Ireland, and the Catherine CONWAY on the same ship was from Dumfrieshire in Scotland, so it is unlikely that they were related.

Melancthon and Bridget are my great great great grandparents. Last name is Balcombe but from what I can tell, they just wrote what they heard in those days and both Melancthon and Bridget had broad accents, therefore the last name was misspelled in all records from their marriage, childrens births and even their death records. There is not much to be known about Bridget however except that she was from Milltown, Sligo County Ireland. Parents unknown. I have seen mention of a father named Flanagan but that is all. Biddy is a bit of an enigma at this point. But I will keep searching.
Good luck

If I was to add these names to a family tree, how would you do it.

I would enter them as BALCOMBE and depending on the software you are using, there should be a facility for 'also known as' in which you would enter the spelling from the index.
Have you contacted the other BALCOMBE researcher who posted on the thread?
Cheers

Hi
Thank you for everything you have told me about Melancthon Balcombe and Bridget Conway.
I was wondering if anyone could tell where Melancthon served his sentence of 7 years. Was Bridget a convict. What work do you think Melancthon did
-
My husbands ancestor, Melancthon Balcombe (alias Buckland) arrived in Sydney, Australia, on the 10th of July, 1837. He was aboard the convict ship, "MANGLES 8". The records show that he was 5'8" tall, had dark brown (almost black) hair, dark brown eyes and that his complexion was dark, sallow and freckled. He had a scar and a hairy mole on his left cheek, his nose inclined to the right side and he had several warts on the back of his right hand. He was`committed on the 10th of June, 1836, by T. Budgen, esq.,charged on the oaths of William Snelling and others, with feloniously stealing, at Burstow, Surrey, a bullock's hide, his property.' He was held in custody until Tuesday 28th of June, 1836, when he appeared at the General Quarter Session at Guildford, Surrey, and was sentenced to Seven Years Transportation. Thus, he came to Australia. He had previously been convicted on the 6th January, 1835, and sentenced to six months hard labour at Brixton, for stealing one truss of hay valued at two shillings from John Creasey.
Would there have been a newspaper article re his crimes/trial and if so, what would be the likely newspaper to search please? Also, are there records for Brixton prison?
Cheers, Andrea. (in SW Vic, Australia)

Hi balcowa,
Thank you. I think I talked to you years ago about a reunion at Colac for the Balcombe and castles.

Hi,
Would Melancthon Balcombe (Bokkam and other spellings) and Bridget Conway need a ticket of leave to get marriage. When would they been free from their sentence.
Would there be any census for these 2 in Ireland or England
