Title: Rev. Gerald FITZGERALD DD - Trinity College
Post by: Dazey999 on Monday 07 June 10 17:53 BST (UK)
My 5xg-grandfather, Rev. Gerald Fitzgerald DD, spent almost all his adult life at Trinity College, Dublin...he entered as a Sizar in 1759, became a Fellow in 1765, Doctor of Divinity in 1778 and eventually became Vice-Provost 1795-1806.  He was born c.1740 in the North of Ireland and married Elizabeth Preston c.1773 - with children born roughly 1775-1792.  Do you think his marriage and the christening of his children would have taken place in the University Chapel?  If so, does anyone know how I might research those records, please?

All I can find out about Gerald's parentage is that his father (also Gerald) was killed the year he was born whilst serving as a Lieutenant in the Prussian Army.

Any thoughts/advice would be most welcome.
Thanks

Have you found the Baptisms of Rev. Gerald and Elizabeth's children. I have in the Trinity Dublinese a mention of two of their sons. There is one person who I have been in contact that says the one John Fitzgerald was a Reverend as well. I am wondering if their is a possiblity that they named two of their sons John Fitzgerald. The portion of the Dublinese that I have is for Attorney's. The two sons mentioned are Preston Fitzgerald and John Fitzgerald. My 4g-grandfather Jo hn Fitzgerald was an Attorney and I believe that the John Fitzgerald mentioned in the Dublinese is him. I am trying to find anything that confirms or discounts this.
Thank You Carla

This man is of interest to me because of his mathematical leanings.  Place and DOB of great interest, has anything turned up in the past ten years on those topics?

Thanks for your interest genecolm.  No, sadly nothing further has come to light, though i would mention that Gerald Fitzgerald was a Professor of Hebrew (not maths).  Kind regards

Thanks! His TCD career had many phases, Donegall Lecturer of maths (1770-1782, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donegall_Lectureship_at_Trinity_College_Dublin), professorships of Law (1784-1790), Hebrew (1790-?), vice provost etc, before leaving academia for parish work 1806-1819. Different times!

Would the Bishop of Limerick be better documented?

Thanks. I'm not seeing evidence of such a bishop with the last name Fitzgerald.

Dublin Evening Post, 2 Jun 1796

"TRIAL OF THEOPHILUS SWIFT, Esq, FOR AN ALLEDGED LIBEL OF THE FELLOWS OF TRINITY COLLEGE
"..........
The Rev Gerald Fitzgerald was next sworn, and having been examined by the prosecutor's council, was asked by Councillor Fletcher on the part of the defendant, what his opinion was respecting the propriety, according to the Statute Laws of the University, of Fellows marrying? - To the question Mr Fitzgerald declined to answer on the grounds it might criminate himself, and on Mr Curran's, who was Council for the Fellows of T.C having objected to that claim of evidence,  it was overruled by the Court, which gave as its opinion that Mr Fitzgerald should answer the questions which should be put to him. On this decision of the Court, Councillor Barrington, for the defendant, plied him very closely, Mr Fitzgerald said, at length that it was a negative Statute, and little, or not, in operation."
