Title: Newspaper archives- Liverpool Courier
Post by: sellio on Monday 07 June 10 17:43 BST (UK)
I am wondering if there is an easy way to search the Liverpool Courier archives.

I want to look up a birth announcement 1860-1862. I am trying on the ancestry site but it seems to be very hit and miss and VERY long winded. Is there any other site that ha sthe records online?

Hi Sellio

This is an interesting website

You may not find what you are looking for, but it's an interesting read.

Kind Regards

Jennie

Hi,

They weren`t big on putting names on Birth Announcements  in those days.

e.g.
August 14th (1860) at 1 Pownell Square Mrs William Jones of a daughter. (this William Jones was a Victualler)

Do you have an address for the family from the 1861 census?

No, I'm afraid I don't.

I only know the name from Elizabeth Ann Jones' marriage (married William wainwright, 1889) and death certificates. I know she was born on 17th March 1860-62 (different dates on each cert!). I know her father was William, a builder. Then I know nothing. I am trying to track the mother but it seems an impossible task.

Have you found her on censuses after she married? What is her birthplace?

How do you know her day and month of birth if you are unsure of the year?

Yes, I found her on the census and she was born in Liverpool. Marriage cert gives 1862, death cert gives 1860.

Last year I was lucky enough to meet my late mum's cousin and she , as a child, lived with her grandma (Elizabeth Ann) and grandad for a while and always lived close until Elizabeth Ann died in 1934. Sadly my newly discovered relative passed away in December but I did get as much information as she could remember. I was told Elizabeth Ann's family disapproved of the marriage to William Wainwright and after 1889 no contact was made apart from one sister (no name, I'm afraid) who went to live in Ireland.

Hi Sellio,

I never answered your question about newspapers.  I can`t tell whereabouts you are living, but  try accessing your county library online and see if they offer free access to the Gale 19c Newspapers.  If they do you can access these using your library card number.

Regarding your Elizabeth Ann - I am fairly sure that the William and Elizabeth Jones that CaroleW found in a previous topic could well be yours.  I suspect she may have been knocking a couple of years off her age as she was married to a younger man.  A womans prerogative! William Jones was a Builder Employer by 1901 living with his son in law Andrew Bancroft and daughter Mary in Birkenhead.

Thanks Mo.

I got that one and that is the one I am trying to investigate. I started sending for birth certs but after the first three I stopped as the cost was starting to mount up. I tried to use the cros referencing service but it didn't work out and I received yet another wrong one.

AS you know, Mo, I have been trying to unpick this one for a while.

I need to find Elizabeth Ann's mother's maiden name so I can send for the birth certificate. Luckily, my Aunt Margie, whom I was lucky enough to meet last year just before she passed away, told me the exact birthday so if I can get a birth cert with 17th March I should be fairly sure that I have the right one. This is the problem with popular names..... . The paternal line of this family were also from the same area with the amazingly unusual name of Jackson!! .... it has not been easy but it has been really interesting and I have found out all sorts about my family (it's a wonder I don't have webbed fingers!)

I live on the East Yorkshire Coast.

Cheers!

Sheila

Who were the witnesses on her marriage cert?

Hi,

Not sure if you have the 1881 census for her?  She is with sister Martha Emily living with her Uncle Edward Jones born Broughton Flintshire.  On this census her and Martha are shown as being born West Derby Lancashire.

As your Elizabeth Ann was born 17th March 1860 ish and the family were living in Toxteth Park on the 1861 census then she would in all probability have been registered West Derby not Liverpool.  There is also the fact that you could register a child up to six weeks after they were born so this could take you into the  April - June Quarter.

Is this in your pile of unwanted Certificates? :
Elizabeth Ann Jones Registered West Derby June Quarter 1860 Volume 8b. page 373

By the way, I personally would not use the GRO in a case such as this.  I would contact the Liverpool Registration Office and explain the problem.  Most Registration Offices are far more helpful than the GRO.

Failing that I would send for Martha Emilys birth certificate as suggested in the other topic.  This at least would give you the mothers maiden name.

Regards,
Mo

The marriage cert has the following details:
June 3rd 1889
witnesses: Elizabeth Ann Wainwright (William Wainwright's sister)
Henry Roberts ( no idea who he is)

married after banns which suggests they were in no especial hurry (as opposed to licence).

By a massive cooincidence, a week or so ago, someone contacted me with a suggestion that my Elizabeth Ann Jones could be the sister of his great grandmother.

His family, Bancroft, is the same family we are chasing here but the maiden name he has for Elizabeth Ann's mother is Elizabeth Edwards. When I looked this up on Free BMD it came up with no results so now I am wondering if this is the correct family after all.

I think the suggestion for the West Derby cert is a good one and I shall order that and see whatthat turns up.

Thank you again, all you fantastic helpers.

Sheila

The man who may be a distant cousin of mine is e-mailing me a copy of Martha Emily's birth certificate although, for me, the clinch would be an Elizabeth Ann cert showing 17th March.

I have just ordered the certificate 8b 373 and shall wait until that arrives. If that fails I may try 8b 35.

See www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Thanks Mo.

I looked through those the other day but I am still stuck on connecting Elizabeth's birth to the maiden name  of the mother, i.e. Edwards.

At the moment I am am checking the maiden names of the brides of William Jones' who were married in Liverpool from 1858 to 1860 (from BMD) then I'm checking the maiden names for a match with Elizabeth Ann and Jones. It's not been very successful so far!

I feel the need to run around the room screaming and cheering!!!!! It was 8b 373... you were right, Mo.

Today, the umpteenth birth cert arrived and it is THE ONE!

Elizabth Ann Jones, b. 17th March 1860 (so she did lie about her age when she got married!)... father William, plasterer and mother Elizabeth, maiden name Edwards,

Thankyou so much to all the wonderful helpers on roots chat. It has been a mightty long haul.
