Hi,
thought I would post a picture of my Granny outside of the shop she worked in. Must be about 1916 or so. The shop I believe was in the High St., Brechin. It would be good to know what pictures people have that may be of interest to others?

That's a nice picture, you are very lucky to have it! Thank you for sharing it..look at all the bottled produce on the shelf, it is funny that now in Australia there is a real resurgence of going back to older more economical ways, eg growing and preserving your own food!
I only have a few pictures of my anscestors in Scotland, and they are portraits. I wonder of photography was relatively expensive and hence why there are not more?

Yes, that's part of the reason. A camera wasn't the sort of thing an average family could afford, and it required a great deal of specialised skills and equipment to take and process the photographs.
There was also the matter of exposure time. Photographic materials were not sensitive enough to take exposures of fractions of a second, as we are accustomed to do, and cameras were large, bulky and heavy and needed to be set up on a tripod, so casual snaps were really not an option. That's why most 19th century photographs of people tend to be the very formal posed studio shot.

Was your Granny a Gellatly, or did she just work in the shop? (I am a distant relative of the James Gellatly who owned the shop and who died in 1919 and am interested in the family).

I am related to Walter Gellatly, Baker Brechin. His Wife Jean was my Aunt.
Be pleased to make contact with any relations

Have sent you a PM.

Elwyn.. I don't yet have access to PM.
The first wife of Walter Gellatly. Jane ( Jean) Duncan Souter Beattie, my Aunt. I was not aware of the Souter in her name. From family tree.. Janes mother was Mary Anne Davidson b. 12 Aug 1873.... Marys mother was Jean Souter b. 30 Nov1846 m. 20 Oct 1871 d. 19 Sept 1882. Any connection with your family?
Also for your question regarding Walter contacting Soutters in Australia.I don,t know... but think?? Jessie Millar is still living in Brechin and may have family contacts. I am intrested in contacting my cousin Joyce Beattie currently I think living in Edinburgh married to Prof. Bill Duncan

Hello Stewart, Just heard about you via Bruce Gellatly, my nephew, who also lives in Edinburgh. I was very fond of your father who was my mother's youngest brother. I was extremely lucky to have had Jeannie Souter Beattie as my mother. I have been married to Bill Duncan for 56 years and both now in our 80s! In response to your message we have now joined RootsChat.com - a first for us! I am a pen and paper person and not computer literate so communication may be a bit stilted in this format. You might like a letter!!! We would love to hear from you.

I'm related to Walter Gellatly. His younger brother George is my grandfather. Pleased to hear from any relatives. I have lost touch with Joyce.

Hi Stewart,
Thanks for the reply.
I had understood that grandfather George was the youngest of the family but as I research the family apparently Walter was the youngest.

Ron
