I am having a real problem tracing information on Walter GOLBY. I have a marriage certificate 14 May 1910 to a Emma Louise HADDOCK showing his father as Richard GOLBY (deceased) with occupation as a miner. On his army service records it says he was born in Sheffield approx 1880/1881. I can only find him on the 1911 census with his wife and child and that too says he was born in Sheffield. I cannot find a birth, 1891 or 1901 census. Please can anyone help?

Hi and welcome to rootschat :)
Have you looked for his birth on freebmd site?
That should give you an idea of the area in which he was born and you could buy the birth cert. to get the exact address.

On his 1914 attestation papers his birthdate is endorsed as "18 Sept 1881" in the right-hand margin of the first page.
-
Who were the witnesses to the 1910 marriage?
-
I think Walter is enumerated (in Sheffield) as Walter GOLDBY in 1891, with widowed mother Mary, sister Florence and brother Richard: RG12 piece 3823 folio 112 page 5.
-
In 1881 the family is GOLBEY, in Nether Hallam. Head of household is Mary, already a widow (but presumably pregnant with Walter). She's wrongly enumerated as aged 57 - must in fact have been 37 which would be consistent with the 1891.
1881 ref: RG11/4624/34/7.

Oddly they seem to be called JONES in 1871 ???
They are in Kiveton Park - head of household is Richard, 33, a Warwickshire-born miner.
1871 ref: RG10/3462/107/5

Walter's brother Richard GOLBY (26, discharged soldier) is in the South Yorkshire Asylum in 1901: RG13/4334/133/6.
His asylum records are in Sheffield Archives, indexed here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=199-nhs3&cid=-1#-1
(search for Golby in this very long page)

Was any of the above useful?

Sorry not to have replied before
Yes - excellent - thank you very much.
I'll keep looking for his birth record and 1901 census and also death record.
-
Possible death here for Richard snr - consistent with his age in 1881 and the Kiveton Park address at that time:
Death Mar qtr 1872
Richard JONES aged 34
Worksop 7b 25
(Obviously this would be inconsistent with his being Walter's natural father).
-
The older children seem to have been registered as JONES.
Births
Dec qtr 1869 Joseph Samuel JONES Worksop 7b 39 (and death aged 2, Dec qtr 1871)
Dec qtr 1871 Richard JONES Worksop 7b 37
Dec qtr 1873 Florence JONES Worksop 7b 37
