Title: "Navigation Hotel" Runcorn
Post by: frankray on Saturday 05 June 10 09:17 BST (UK)
I take it this is the 'Navigation' by the canal?  I there a definitive history of the area.  I understand there was a brewery close by, and it was the 'local' for Capt Smith of Titanic fame who moored up his narrow boat there from time to time.
Thanks  Ray.

The "Navigation Inn" is the one by the canal beside Delph Bridge.

What date was the brewery supposed to be close by?

On the 1905 Runcorn map it shows a brewery behind the Navigation Hotel, but no name is given.
Canal Street is the address

There is no brewery listed in Runcorn in the 1902 Directory. Perhaps you could contact the Runcorn & Dist. Historical Society, http://www.runcornhistsoc.org.uk/information_request.html

If you type in ' A Century of Cheshire Brewers' this will take you to a page that lists out the towns for cheshire. Scroll to Runcorn you will see Bass Charington,if you read that it shows  A Thomas Jones-Navigation Brewery and also mentions the Captain of the Titanic. It looks as though the business did not start till around 1906

Thomas Jones, Navigation Brewery, Canal Street. Home brew house closed 1906. As it was just a "Home Brew House" that is probably why it is not in the directory.

Have just been looking at two trade directories they show that Thomas Jones was the publican of the Navigation, I cannot find any refernec to the brewery, although the site that I picked up on did have him as a brewer. He must have been an upstanding resident of Runcorn for the trade directories show a Thomas Jones as a councillor, the later directory gives his ward as Mersey, which I think the Navigation would have been in

Many thanks to all who replied regarding the Navigation Hotel/Inn on Canal Street.  A Gt Granduncle James Crosby had been landlord there c1871 census.  Thomas Jones a later landlord was also a well heeled gentleman who I believe owned the Brewery and used the Navigation as a 'bottle store'  As regards Thomas Jones there is much more to know - his back ground, family etc.,  Your help has been greatly appretiated.  Ray.

I have just stumbled on this conversation and don't know how old it is but my great, great, great grandfather William Brereton is cited in the 1841 census as living in the Navigation Inn and was described as a brewer. Cheers, Rosie

If you go to the 1876 map at  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/351901/382970/13/100102 you can see the "Navigation Brewery" marked behind the "Navigation Inn". You will have to change the zoom level if you don't have a subscription.
