Hi
You need to look up his birth on Scotlands People to find his mothers maiden name and year of marriage. SP is a paysite
That info will help you to find his parents marriage also on SP which will give both of their parents names and their mothers maiden name
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Think I've found your man ... was this Robert who died 2001 in Paisley? If so, the death index on the aforementioned ScotlandsPeople gives his mum's maiden name as Hughes.
This would correspond nicely with a marriage between Robert Ewing and Catherine Hughes, 1912, in Paisley.

Details from 1912 marriage certificate:
Married at St Mirin's Church, Paisley on the 1st January 1912, according to the Forms of the RC Church.

Catherine was 21 and a laundry worker. Her parents were Felix Hughes, iron turner (?) and Rose Hughes m.s. Gurlin.
Witnesses were Hugh Hughes and Mary McKinnon.
There are deaths for Robert in 1955 aged 67 and Catherine in 1968 aged 78, both in Paisley.

I am also researching this family.
John Ewing & Mary Lang Hart married 1873, I have been able to locate 7 children, their son William is the grandfather of my mothers sister.
I don't have anything directly on Robert, only that he was born 1888c.

I'll have a look at medal cards, etc. With such a common name, it may be quite difficult though.

I have already checked the Medal Card Index - too many
I have also checked what few WW1 records still exist for that name and none fits his profile

See above - Scotlands People but you have to pay
Without his service number there is no way of tracing him. About 60% of service records were destroyed in the WW2 blitz
