Title: HMS Victory
Post by: spark on Thursday 03 June 10 20:00 BST (UK)
Hi,

I am aware that HMS Victory was in use as a training ship until about 1922 when she went in to dry dock.  I have a photo (attached) which I believe to be Walter George Richardson (B1876) and his wife Alice (nee Cro[a]ker).  Possibly their wedding photo, I can see a ring on his finger and her left hand is uppermost but cannot make out a ring.  They married in Dec 1897.  On the marriage certificate he lists occupation as bricklayer and no mention of the Royal Navy.

So what I am asking rootschatters is:
1) is uniform consistent with 1897
2) badges on uniform denote?
3) would a bricklayer be an occupation on HMS Victory?
4) where should I go to find more information - internet / books / letters / in person?

Thanks

Spark

Where was he born? There are records online of seamans services at that time.

I don't think this photo was taken in 1897 - the lady is showing way too much of her shoes and ankles and her blouse is not close fitting.  Hairstyle is not right for 1897 either.  I think it is more likely that this was taken after 1918, maybe even in the early 1920s.

Perhaps the couple have been mis-identified?  :-\

Could be mis-identified, Nell

Assignment based on facial similarities to confirmed assignments.  If that makes sense.  Will look into some more.

So what I am asking rootschatters is:
2) badges on uniform denote?

Right arm badge denotes he was a stoker (engine room rating)
Left arm badge denotes 1st Good Conduct Badge. At that time, I think, the first was awarded for 3 years good conduct.

Hugh
