Hi Everyone!
I'm researching the Scratchley, Polden and Poolman families from Wiltshire and surrounding areas. Place names that come to mind are :- Warminster, Chitterne, Devizes and Monkton Deverill. If these family names are in your field of interest I would love to hear from you.
Regards from Mozzie. ::)

Hi Mozzie
I am interested in Poldens from Chitterne. John Polden (born circa 1813) wife Mary Ann daughter Lucy born 1845 married Frederick Dewey 1864.
I am trying to trace the Poldens back from John
If we have a common interest please let me know ;)

Hi Just seen your note. I`m from one of the offshoot Scratchley`s born and living in Sidmouth, Devon. My Father was Harold Thomas Scratchley (1916 - 1988) brother of Ken, Cecil & Dorothy Scratchley who live(d) in and around Devizes. My Father "got away" from
Wiltshire just prior to WW11 service in the RAF (Egypt) and married Patricia C Palin in 1939 at St. Michael`s (?), next to the Crammer, Devizes before coming back to Sidmouth at the end of the war. My Grandfather (Thomas H. Scratchley) married an Edith Hollo(a)way.................................so it goes on !

Hi Mozzie and others
My gr gr grandparents are George Polden and Harriett Rose Stokes who presumably died in childbirth -son Harry. In the Family Polden Bible George was baptised Jan 18, 1825 and died Sept 15, 1887. My gr grandfather was George Polden b Mar 11,1856. My mother is the last of this Polden line. Am researching Polden, Poolman, Tozer and Johnson's. Was John (George's brother) a Carter married to Mary - a straw bonnet maker in 1861 census?

HI
My great-grandmother was Kate Polden (born New Forest in July/Aug/Sept 1880 ref 2b 700 in the records, possibly Eling). I think her parents were Alfred Polden (occ. Hawker, b 1822 in Chilmark, Wiltshire) and Anne Polden married in June 1867 in the New Forest. (Anne Polden nee Burford, 6th Nov 1842 in Brockenhurst, Hampshire : Parents John Burford and Louisa Gates).
I think Alfred Polden died in Sept 1881 aged 59/60. Anne Polden appears to have re-married to a Harry Phillips (b. 1855, Stoney Cross, Hampshire) in 1883, who died in 1897. In the 1881 census Kate had 5 Polden siblings (Ellen aged 16; Rosina aged 11; Alfred aged 9; Maria aged 7; Caroline aged 5) and one Phillips sibling (Lillian A Phillips born in Cadnam, Hampshire in 1884)
Kate appears in the 1901 census as a servant in Cadnam, Hampshire, aged 20. She married my G.grandfather Samuel Edward Thresher (A merchant Seaman) in the New Forest in 1903. My Grandmother Ivy Lilian Amy Thresher was born in 1904 in Weymouth, when they lived at 12 Mountery(??) terrace.
Can anyone shed light on Ivy Lilian Amy Thresher, Alfred Polden, Anne Burford, Kate Polden, Samuel Edward Thresher (he is not on any birth / death records that I can find) and my great-grandmothers siblings (and anyone else on the list really)? My grandmothers lineage has always been a mystery to my siblings and I).
Thanks for your help and best wishes
Dom

Hi Dom, My name is Ann. Ivy Lillian Amy (Dina) was my granny too, our families lost touch when my parents divorced. It was great to see your name on the board! I have just discovered the same as you have posted. Nanny Crow was decidedly economical with the truth when it came to her origins. I have my suspicions that there is more than a little gypsy blood in us. The occupations listed, Dealer, Hawker & Licensed Hawker bear this out, also from what I remember Dina was a bit Indian looking. One avenue I have been trying to follow is a lady who lived in Southampton opposite the Pirelli Slipper factory, her name was Grace, she was older than Nanny Crow & we called her Aunty Grace, wether she was a real relative I don't know. Her daughter Rosie lived on a dairy farm in Petworth. I have memories of staying with both of them with Nanny Crow but as I was very young they are hazy to say the least. I'm not sure how this site works but if you can contact me I would love to talk to you Cheers Annie

Hello Mozzie and you too 'The Cat'
I have just found your messages and wondered if you are still keeping an eye on the chat. My gg grand parents were John Polden b1813 Chitteren and Mary Ann b1819. I am a descendant of their eldest daughter Ellen born 1841. I have earlier information on Mary Ann's family, but at present I can go no further back with John.
Wishing everyone good luck with their searching
