Title: 1851 Census - Emma Painter
Post by: roz.ronly on Wednesday 02 June 10 14:48 BST (UK)
I once found this 1851 Census record with 13 year old Emma PAINTER working as a servant in the household of a Rev Budge in Corfe Castle, Wareham, Dorset.  At the time I did not think she was my Emma and just made a note of it.

I now realise she was mine but despite trying Ancestry and various sites, I haven't been able to find it again.

Can someone help me here, I would be eternally grateful as its driving me nuts.

There is a 2 year-old Emma Painter living in Shapwick, Dorset in 1841 who may prove to be the same person. She is living with Edward (85) and Martha (70) Painter who may be her grandparents, and Mary Painter (25) who could be her (unmarried?) mother or aunt.

ref HO107/1856 folio 167 page 2.

The Rectory at Corfe Castle in 1851 has the Rev Canon and family listed as on holiday, and the surname is unfortunately crossed over with ink, but the surname does not appear to be Budge (possibly Barker or Barkis?). The tenants looking after the place while the family are absent are James WILLS and Elizabeth Mary HIBBS-see their relationship for the above details. Wherever Emma is at least she's on holiday with them  ;)
