Hi,
I wondered if anyone knows what happened to Danes Passage was in Lincoln please. My Great Great Grandfather Henry Clayton (c1845 Edlington Lincs) and family were living at no 4 in 1881 and 1891. It looks as though it was near Danes Terrace on the census pages.
I have looked on Google street view and found Danes Terrace, and Danes Cottage, but I can't find Danes Passage. The Terrace is just off Steep Hill in the Danes Gate area. I expect it is long gone, but if anyone with local knowledge remembers anything I would be very grateful please.
Many thanks.

You're obviously in the right area. I seem to recall that at least part of Danes Terrace was a row of lock up garages as early as the mid 1960s.
I think Ancestry may have the 1946 Kelly's Directory - it's possible that at some point on Danes Terrace it may say "here is Danes Passage" or some such.

Sounds like many of the courtyards and terraced passages mentioned in the book detailing the Steep Hill area around 1900. I don't have a copy with me at the moment but several of my lot were living in and around the area.

Mew64 .
on 1911 census it gives 6 houses for Danes Passage,
then goes to Danes Terrace,
maybe it was just above the T, on terrace ???

I too had a number of ancestors residing in and around Danes Terrace in the late 19th early 20th century including one of my Great Great Grandmothers, Caroline Wheatley, who lived and died at 13 Danes Terrace in 1902.
Danes cottages and Danes Courtyard have been preserved and I've attached one of 3 photographs I took a short while back of these cottages.

Hi Eilleen
Yes I believe they have about 40,000 photos in the library at Free School Lane and they can be contacted by email on:

Nothing showing Elmers Wardrobe Depot on Flaxengate by any chance?

Interstingly the library does hold a document entitled: Housing Act, 1930 : Official Representation in connection with slum clearance in Mint Lane, Danes Terrace, Danesgate, Grantham St., Occupation Rd, April 1934,
The author of the document was the Lincoln, City Council, Health Department so it looks as if quite a large area, including I presume Danes Terrace, was cleared well before the second world war due I suppose to their insanitary conditions.

Wow, thank you so much everyone, I didn't expect so much help. I will see if the archives have any photographs,

In the 1913 Directory of City of Lincoln, Elmers Wardrobe Depot was listed as being in Clasketgate which of course Flaxengate crosses.
Alan :)
Addition: In 1919 they are listed as G Elmer, Wardrobe & Second-Hand furniture Dealer, 29 Clasketgate

Thanks Alan
I have quite a few directory refs for the company from the early 1880's through to the 1930's. Seems they had at least two premises, one on Flaxengate and one at 29 Clasketgate.
Re the house clearances etc
Danes Terrace was previously known as Bull Ring Terrace (certainly mid 1880's) and judging by the maps of the time there doesn't appear to be much different building wise from the 1880's to 1905 and beyond.
The Housing Act document mentioned is one of a few at the library for different areas of the town, i had a good nose through one for the Waterside South area (with one lot down there and another in Brummits Court my lot lived in all the best places ;)). The one i read detailed the condition of the houses, sanitation, population levels, infant mortality and noted that two folks had died after falling down the incredibly steep stairs that had no hand rails.

Ditto in the 1933 Kelly's Directory (Wardrobe Dealer) and 1900 (no number given)

Hi,
Whilst researching my Grandfather William Clayton who was killed in action in Loos France in 1915 and dealing with his father Henry Clayton 1846 to 1892 I came across this post which is now several years old but we share a Great Great Grandfather. I have just registered with Roots Chat today in order to be able to message you but not really sure whether it will work. Ian Berry son of Ronald Berry (deceased) whose mother was Ethel May Clayton daughter of William Clayton of Lincoln. Thanks

There is a passage that runs behind danes cottages and leads to temple gardens. It also goes towards danes terrace but now blocked by the garage block. I live in one of the remaining houses on danesgate/flaxengate that must have avoided the slum clearance.
