hi guys, what is a family bible
-
A large, often elaborately bound copy of the Bible (Google for images and you will see what I mean), which would be handed down as a family heirloom. The importance for family historians is that they often contain handwritten records of family events - births marriages and deaths. This would happen partly because the bible might be the only book owned by the family, and it was sure to be looked after and preserved.

wow......would love to own one of those!!:)

CanadaGenWeb, which also has a cemetery project, has a family Bible transcription project:

Think they would be looking for Bibles that have Canadian links but always worth checking in case relatives are mentioned in someone's Bible.

Don't forget, when someone went abroad, that might be the one thing that was kept through the generations and treasured. Clothing and homesteading items might not have been passed down.

I know some people who have a family Bible of my ancestors which have dates of births of ancestors going right back to 1789 in Suffolk. Also I have recently contacted someone who has a Musgrave family Bible for my Durham Musgraves.
-
do you have the durham family bible, all my musgraves are from county durham
-
And you have to remember, when you are lucky enough to find your family bible, not to take all dates of births etc. written in it, as 'gospel'.
They are sometimes written in, some years after the event, and can be days or even years, 'out'.
It's not a primary source.

Our 'Family Bible' is one which was presented to my maternal g. grandparents on their wedding day in 1876, by the vicar. Nothing fancy about it, and inside the covers are family names, not laid out tree-style.
