Title: What to do if I can't find marriage
Post by: feefee on Tuesday 01 June 10 08:59 BST (UK)
I have John Thompson born 1828/29 and married Catherine ? (both born Rothbury).  In 1841 John is a male servant  and in 1851, 61 and 71 he is living in Rothbury, Northumberland.  They are both born there, but I am trying to find date of marriage to get cert for John's father.  The one I thought likely was AMJ 1846 Rothbury but there is no Catherine,  and after searching can find no alternative.  What should I do from here?

Thanks fifi

Hi

There are 3 possible marriages of a John to a Cathe/arine in Newcastle. However, it might be best to check up on one of the children's birth cert to find her maiden name - Edward, Ann and Elizabeth from the 1861

This might be Edward's :

Edward George Thompson, March q, 1849, Rothbury, v 25 p 434

Hi

Can't help with the marriage but if you look at the Rothbury (Northumberland) entries in the Durham Bishops transcripts on the Family Search pilot site on page 433 there is a baptism for John, son of John and Susan Thompson March 28th 1831. Johns occupation is joiner.

The next entry is also for  Thompson - Edward son of Richard and Elizabeth Thompson (brother maybe?)

I did'nt look any further back but I suspect there are more Thompsons to be found  :)

Strangely there is a marriage for a Catherine Aynsley in rothbury in 1859, but not seemingly to John Thompson.

This John Thompson is on the 1851/1861 census as born in 1831.
His death aged 60 in 1891 10b/343 Rothbury.

The John married to Catherine is on the same census' as born in 1827.
His death  aged 50 in 1876 10b/275 Rothbury.

Thanks everyone.  This one certainly has me beat. I have John Thompson as father Richard (? another alien abduction).  Elisabeth his wife is widowed in 1841 with son Richard in Rothbury.  I can find no marriage for these either.  Rothbury is such a small place and it seems like most of them are called Thompson.  This is definitely the worst line I have followed and is even beginning to make Irish records look like a piece of cake.  Any help greatly appreciated I am totally at a loss.  :-\
