Hi - been given the name Tom Nebbs in Ardrossan around the 1890's maybe a sea captain? married my ggrand mother 2nd marriage. Can't find any Nebbs in white pages. Have I got the name wrong - maybe it's short for something else. Any ideas out there
Much appreciated

Hi Shaza :)
If you could post the name of your g-grandmother and the date (even approximate) of the marriage, I'm sure people will be able to confirm the name of her husband for you. I think that would be the easiest way, rather than guessing at what the name could be (incidentally, I can't find any NEBBS in the 1891 Scotland census).
Cheers

Shaza,
Just wonder if it could be Nobbs? Easy enough for e and o to look the same.
Someone else will have a better idea.
Cheers
KHP :D
Sorry about the guessing part Prue, our posts coincided.

Yes, But my reply refers to the ONS Web site which has only details for England and Wales. In 2002 there were 20 bearers of the surname Nebbs.Whether it is a spelling variant of another surname or not, I think only looking at old parish records is likely to giv e guidance.

Hi Shaza,
Yes the name Nebbs does indeed exist. Thomas William Nebbs was a brother to my grandfather William Frank Nebbs. They were the sons of Thomas Nebbs b.1835, Aylesford,Kent and Rebecca Hollands b.1842 Maidstone,Kent. Thomas and Rebecca are buried in Aylesford,Kent.
Thomas William Nebbs' son, Thomas Alexander Nebbs, emigrated to Canada and has descendents there.
I'm new to Rootschat (I signed up to answer your query) so I don't know if we can talk privately somehow. I hope so.

Hi Cheezer
Welcome to RootsChat :)
You just need a couple of more posts on the main forum and then you can use the Private Message service (PMs) to contact people and exchange personal emails etc. When you are ready, just click on the small green scroll under Shaza's name on the l/h side and this will take you through to the PM area of RootsChat.

Hi Cheezer
I have sent you a personal message - hope you get it haven't heard yet.
The Thomas Nebbs who immigrated to Canada was my nana's step dad. Her father died in Scotland and her mother Margaret Blackburn/McLean then married Tom Nebbs, she already had 2 children and together they had 2 more and they ended up immigrating to Canada. My mother was born there. I am in contact with some of the Nebbs descendants in Canada. Hope to hear from you

Hi Shaza
Cheezer needs to post at least two/three posts on the main forum before the PM system is activated. The message you are getting is the standard message you will get if you try and PM someone with just one first post.
Monica :)
PS: From their profile, Cheezer was last on line on 6/11 so still around!

Sorry Shaza, I was busy.
Although I am not descended from either of your Toms,I have done a bit of research on them. I would love to talk with you privately but this will have to do until I've passed the security scrutiny!
Thomas Alexander volunteered to serve Canada in 1915. He listed Thomas W Nebbs of Royal Naval Barracks,Sheerness,Kent,as his next of Kin.
Thomas Alexander married Mabel Besant in 1927 in Winnipeg,Manitoba. They had a son Thomas Allan .I don't know what happened to the sister who emmigrated with Thomas.
You say that your Mother "was born there" i.e.Canada.Does this mean that your Mother moved to the UK at some point in her life?
I doubt if there are any Nebbs in Scotland now.Thomas W was only there for a while. He did visit his son in Canada but strangely left his wife Margaret at home.
Thomas W did show up in some Newspaper articles in Scotland. He was teaching seamanship to a newly-formed group of sea cadets.
Talk to you soon,
Cheezer

Shaza,
I've just re-read your posting. It looks like you are saying that Thomas William and Margaret emmigrated to Canada.I've always thought it was their son Thomas Alexander and a sister who emmigrated. We'll have to clear this up!

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
So glad to hear from you!
The Margaret you mentioned above is my great grandmother. I'm not of Nebbs blood either. And NO I don't think they emmigrated to Canada. It was my grandmother Jean, her brother Hugh and their 2 half brother and sister Tom A Nebbs and Nance(Annie) Nebbs who all emmigrated. In other words their children. Tom A Nebbs I was told had a son called Alan now you are telling me it was Thomas Allan. Too many Thomas's I can't keep up. He died young evidently in a place called Nepawah (spelling??/!#?0) up north from Winnipeg - haven't found it on the map as yet. Also I believe he married twice one being to a Mabel. I have a photo of him and his father I'll email you when I get your address. Also photos of his father and Mother. Nance married in Winnipeg to Carl Radford and they had 3 children one of whom is still alive and I have talked to on the phone.
The Thomas W Nebbs was in the Coast Guard and I believe posted to Scotland where he met and married Margaret
NO my mother did not emmigrate to England she married my Kiwi dad and emmigrated down here to New Zealand
Hope we can communicate more directly soon
Also thanks for info from MonicaLesl

Hi Shaza, just saw your discussion. I am the girlfriend of your great-step-grandfather's (Thomas William Nebbs) great-great-grandson, Jeremy Radford (decendent of Annie Nebs). I'm doing some research on the family for him and his dad and am working on putting a family tree together from Annie Nebbs side of the family (most of who still live in Manitoba, Canada (ps - look northwest of Winnipeg for Neepawa, it's about 300kms from Wpg). Any info you could share would be great. I can email you what I have for the tree so far if you want. Oh and Thomas Radford (who you spoke to on the phone) is my boyfriend's grandfather - small world!.
Thanks! I can be reached at (*) :)

Hi Heather,
Looks like Shaza hasn't replied yet,so I'll add my two cents.I am related to Annie (Nance),the person in your tree. My Grandfather William Frank Nebbs b.1885 was a Brother to Thomas William Nebbs b.1863.
Shaza and I have exchanged lots of info offline, which explains why there is not much accurate info on this forum.
You will have to write a few postings here to be allowed to "pm" me but suffice it to say I am a cousin to the Radfords.

Just a suggestion - I used to go to school with someone who had this surname ... but their spelling was "Knebbs". The name you're looking for might be mistranscribed?
-
We should always remember that particularly with older documents, censuses and parish records etc. that many people could not read or write, and in the 18th century and earlier there was no standardised spelling, this only began to take root in the early 19th century. It is therefore vital in making progress to ensure that variant spellings of surnames are always included at least in initial searches.

Thanks to everyone for comments and info.
And hello Heather, have tried emailing you direct as you did me maybe they didn't get through. You can email me again direct if you wish. I have sent your boyfriends granddad lots of info before Christmas, he is another source for you as is Cheezer
Sorry for recent delay, summer holidays - have been away!
Cheers Shaza
