This is probably a silly question but here goes - One of my ancestors is Giles Dearlove who married Elizabeth Crockford in Sonning 1757. The parish records spelt her name in this way. When I have found her birth the spelling is Croxford and her parents spelt the same. The further back I go the spelling is still Croxford
Do you think I am following the wrong family now or would I be on the right track and would it depend on the literacy of the scribe who wrote the original entries
Thanks for any ideas
Regards
Mandy

It's not a question of literacy, as there was no right or wrong way to spell a name - everyone spelt names as they sounded to them. It would be another 200 years or so before spelling began to be fixed.
Are there any other families with similar-sounding names in the PRs around that time? It might help if you can find other documentation - wills can be very useful in this respect.

Thankyou for replying.
I have looked through the parish records for similar names but unable to find anything as yet. Thanks for your suggestion of the wills. I'll have a look to see if it helps.

You're most likely on the right track then. Perhaps somebody had a lisp and Croxford became Crockford :)

Sorry I haven't been on line for a week to see your replies.
Sloe Gin you are you could well be right. My better half said something similar
Bumbled - I haven't gone further forward with the name as the surname changed by marriage. If anything comes up though I will get in touch - thanks
