Hi there,
Could sks pleaes do lookup in 1891 census, and if possible the 1871 census for the following:
Alfred George William Mindry B 1855 Portsea, Hamp and Selena Alberta Mindry (born Smith). He was a Ships Steward in the 1881 census.
Possible children were:
Frederick Robert Mindry B 1880 and any others unknown at this stage.
Frederick Robert Mindry B 1858 Portsea, Hamp with wife Mary Ann Mindry (born Warner). Occupation unknown.
Possible children were:
Robert Nathaniel Mindry B 1881 and any others unknown at this stage.

Hi Jackie,
Frederick Robert Mindry born ca. 1880 is shown as son to Frederick Robert and his wife Grace in 1881 ??? (Fred sr's age is mistranscribed I think, should be 24 instead of 34)

Marriage Frederick Robert Mindry - Grace Duke Dec 1879 Portsea
Little Fred possibly dies in 1882 and Fred the elder in 1893. I wish I could find the family in 1891, sigh.
Oops sorry - should have read the last post on the other thread - you had this already.
-
Alfred is already at sea in 1871.
I wonder if this is the family in 1861 - no Frederick shown though.

Thanks Tati for the information. But i am confused now:) I found Frederick Robert Mindry chris 12 Sept 1858 St Mary's Portsea to parents Robert and Ann on LDS Batch C062615, with brother Alfred christened 22 Apr 1855 St Mary's. What does this do to our path we are following?
Also, Frederick Robert Mindry b 1858 is shown as a father to Robert Nathaniel Mindry born 1881 Portsea.
Now this is where it gets good. Robert Nathaniel had a son Alfred George William in South Africa, seemingly following a family name.
HELP:)

This bit seems correct eventhough I haven't a clue where Frederick is hiding on the censuses except for 1881.
Is the source for Robert Nathaniel's parentage trustworthy? Otherwise, if they were my family, I'd get the birth certificate to confirm.

Hi Tati,
I found Robert Nathaniel Mindry birth on freebmd site. It is also recorded in the family bible as 16 Sept 1881 in Portsea. Can't verify now if i did find on LDS as server down or some such problem on the site.
Such a pity pound rand rate so bad, but looks like i will need to order from GRO.
Kind regards

If i could find Robert in 1891 census, then that might help ???
-
Yes it would help - I spent 1hour+ and couldn't find either Robert or Frederick Robert or Grace :( :(
I can't see anything regarding Robert Nathaniel on the IGI, either extracted or member-submitted.
-
What a pain this is proving to be :(
Thank you for all your help today.
Kind regards

Hi everyone,
I now have copy of Robert Nathaniel Mindry birth certificate.
Parents are Alfred George William Mindry and Selina Alberta Mindry formerly Smith. Father occupation shown as Ships Steward RN H.M.S. Duke of Wellington. Birth 16 Sept 1881.
Alfred is shown in 1861 census above with mother Mary, sister Mary and brother Henry. However i cannot find them or the father Robert in the 1871 census. Alfred would have been 16 and as he seemed to follow his dad into the navy, maybe he was an able seaman at sea during 1871. But i still cannot find his mother Mary in 1871.
If anyone can help me find his mom and/or father Robert, i will be grateful
Many thanks
Kind regards
Jackie

There is a Robert MINDRY married age 48 Gunner 1st class born Gillingham
RG10/1134 folio 155 page 16
-
is that in 1871? is Mary his wife with him? Or is he on board a vessel?
-
Yes, it's the 1871. He's on a vessel.
BUT
was he enumerated twice?
RG10/1151 folio 114 page 39
living with wife Mary in Alverstoke.
Rat Island,
Robert MINDRY age 48 Gunner 1st class born Gillingham
Mary Ann age 45 born Devon
Mary Jane age 13
Frederick R age 11
Clind? E age 8 all born Portsea
Helena B age 2 born Rat Island, Portsmouth
-
OH my, the plot thickens. i am supposed to be going to sleep:) Do you think he could be enumerated twice? I know that the enumerators got him wrongly put down as place of birth in some census's. Either Chatham, Kent or he was shown to be Gillingham, Kent. But it is the same guy as he is a Master Gunner for all.
I am gonna have to go now. Will think on it some more and reply some more in the morning.
Regards
Jackie

FamilySearch Pilot has Robert MINDRY buried 31 March 1832 at Gillingham.

Here's the baptism of Robert junior in Chatham
http://www.rootschat.com/links/08u
Robert MINDRY married Theodosia GOSS 1808, St Margaret, Rochester

The link for the baptism for Robert Mindry in Chatham does not link to a baptism, but to a royal navy record.
My Robert Mindry was born about 1825 so is the marriage of Robert and Theodosia his parents?

Ooops try this link

Very long link shrunk!

Not sure if my side, but there is no Robert Mindry on that baptism record. Unless i am not seeing it?
So, regarding Robert Mindry the Master Gunner who was born about 1825, you mentioned he was on board a vessel in 1871 as well. Could you tell me the name of the ship?
Kind regards
Jackie

It's a very large image. You need to scroll to the right. It's the first entry on the second page
It says Borough Island above the entry. Not sure if it's a ship or an island. He is the only one there.
The other entries seem to be tenders.
-
thank you. got it now. I will google Borough Island.

Jackie
-
It looks like Borough Island was also called Burrow Island or Rat Island
http://www.localhistories.org/gosport.html
Strange that it is known by both names in the same census.

I've just found this post. Robert Nathaniel Mindry married Ellen Jane Heslop in 1903 in Natal. She was my husband's great aunt. I have very little information on the Mindry family but would be happy to share what I have.
