Thank you very much for the info - certainly George A S is Alexander's son. What I am trying to find is more about Alexander if possible, who his father was so that I can track him down in Ross and Cromarty.
Thanks again for your time - it is much appreciated.

Marriage ref has been given there. It's the only sure way of finding his family as McKenzie is one of the most common names in R & C

Hi Gadget
Just received the marriage certificate which states he was 30 yrs old (born 1857) and his father was Alexander Mackenzie a farm steward.
Am now looking for an Alexander Mackenzie born Ross and Cromarty with a father Alexander a farm steward - might you have any ideas please?
Many thanks

Having a look but still only finding that George - will have to do some more searching.

Could it be that he was illegitimate and recorded under a different surname and then took his 'real' father's named? This was quite a usual thing in Scotland.

I'll get back to you  :)

Hi again, Phil

I'll reply with any further info on your R& C thread as his birth and early life was there and so, I think, it's a more appropriate board to find and report on these:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,458590.0.htm

His first son was named George. The last available census information that we have on him is that he was born in Poolewe, R & C. The info that I've already found on that thread points to a George and not an Alexander. I think he might well have got confused.

See you on your other thread when I find more.

Hi Gadget
Finally been able to find out more about Alexander. He was buried on 11th Aug 1931. The cemetery records show his age as 77/79 - they must not have been too sure either!! Can you possibly suggest which may have been the "best fit" for Alexander Mackenzie of Poolewe with this information please? Unfortunately I was unable to find the first marriage information at Durham archives.
Many thanks again for your help.
Best wishes
Phil

Hi Phil,

I'm a descendant of Alexander's son George Alexander Stewart MacKenzie. I'd be interested to share information with you.

If you missed WDYTYA tonight, Paul Hollywoods family were from Poolewe, R & C.

He is descended from "an" Alexander MacKenzie son of Kenneth MacKenzie, Son of Donald MacKenzie so worth a look at in case there's a connection  :-\

By my reckoning, George A S MacKenzie and his wife had ten children, all born in Norton between  1895 and 1917. The first was in fact born George Robert Richardson, and may or may not have been George A S MacKenzie's child. My family are descendants of one of their daughters, Alice Ann MacKenzie (born 1906). Where do you fit in Phil?

Hi Joe,

I have been reading all the posts on this thread and believe I am part of this family too. I am the grandaughter of  Stewart Alexander Mackenzie of Norton who was one of George AS Mackenzie's children. My grandfather was born in 1902 and died in 1977.
