Hi
I am trying to find Brewery Street, Primrose Hill, Wakefield in the 1841 census and I'm not having much luck. On today's maps there is a Primrose Hill in Knottingley, Wakefield but I don't know whether this is the same place. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-\
Thank you!

Hi Chris
I've found a description of an old map of South Wakefield which includes Primrose Hill in 1890 but can't find it on a map - www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/yorks24807.htm. I see on google maps that Sparable Lane is still there.
Belle Vue and Thornes Park are to the south of Wakefield town centre so Primrose Hill looks to have been in that area.
There is also a good description of Wakefield on www.wakefield.gov.uk/cultureandleisure/historicwakefield/history/1800-1900.htm
Do you have a family name from the 1841 census which might make it easier to track down the district?

Hi Chris.
If you scroll back through the posts on the West Yorkshire section, there's a thread entitled "Primrose Hill, Wakefield".
It's way back on page no.6, last post dated 7Feb 2010.
I'd suggest you read the posts in conjunction with Googlemaps (Eastmoor, Wakefield) and you'll find Primrose Hill Social Club, now for sale and seachable on Google.
Unfortunately I haven't, as yet, found anything on Brewery St. but I'll keep looking.
Regards, David

Thanks for the replies! I am pretty certain now that the Brewery Street I am looking for was in Wakefield. The Castelow children were born in and around Kirkgate, Eastmoor & Thornes. Another Castelow relative was living in The Spotted Leopard Yard so I wonder if this was part of Brewery Street.
Best wishes
Chris

Hi again Chris.
White's 1853 Directory:
Spotted Leopard, Hannah Thackray, 163 Kirkgate, Wakefield.
Another piece of the jigsaw?

The 1890 ordnance survey map shows Primrose Hill to the north of the irkgate Station and the area as several malthouses and a couple of brewery's. The church for the area looks to be St. Mary's but there are couple of chapels in the area.
