I have been following, through the various census records, John Macleod (abt 1823) and Ann Macleod
(abt 1825)who are my 2x grandparents. Both were born in the parish of Barvas. The address on all the census records is Fivepenny or Fivepenny Ness.
However, I have now obtained, from the OPR, what I believe to be their marriage record on 17/12/1850 at Suainbost. There is no doubt about the spelling of Suainbost as the record is very clear SO can anyone tell me if Suainbost the same place as Shawbost ( Gaelic spelling??) and what the relationship, if any, is between Fivepenny and Suainbost? Is it possible that both records refer to the same place? If not, one of my lines is not correct and I will have to regroup!!

Hi
As I holiday every year on Lewis I can tell you that Suainbost(Swainbost) is up near Ness. It is not the same place as Shawbost. Fivepenny would, I guess, be about 10 miles from Suainbost.
According to Wikipedia, there were 4 Civil Registration Districts on Lewis.
Barvas, Lochs, Stornoway and Uig.
So Suainbost would come under Barvas, for Registration purposes.
So all may not be lost.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Caraid.
I really appreciate your having taken the time to reply
From what you have said it appears that I may have the correct line so, on with the search!
