Seeking information on William Thorpe, baptised on 18th July 1823 at Ely Holy Trinity Church, parents George & Hannah, Father a ‘publican’, the minister was P.Durham.
William joined the East Yorks 15th foot Regiment on 7/9/1840 at Westminster. He married Elisabeth Peverly (Peverley) in Ceylon 1852 (he was a widower at marriage). Daughter Tabitha Priscilla was my Great Grandmother. His children were born in Malta, Gibralter & Litchfield. He was promoted to Colour Sergeant and transferred to 2nd Battalian, 15th Regt. He died on 14/7/1872 aged 48 in Litchfield and his wife moved to New Bury, Bolton, Lancs with her children in search of work.
I have found other families of Thorpes in Ely but cannot find further information this William. There was a George & Susanna Thorpe in Ely having children around that time, George in 1818 & Tabitha in 1821. I do wonder if Hannah could have been Susanna wrongly transcribed. Any help would be appreciated.

The Baptism Index 1801-37 on the Cambs FHS website at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html shows George and Susannah baptising children up to 1835. I agree that it looks as though it's an error, Hannah for Susannah, but it looks more like a parish register error than a transcription error.
Have you checked the occupation of George in the other baptisms? If he too was a publican that would add support to the PR error theory. William may have named his daughter Tabitha for his sister, although the Burial Index on the same site shows two other Tabitha Thorpes buried at Ely Holy Trinity
In 1841 at Ely Holy Trinity was Susan Thorp 40 washer woman, Mary Ann Thorp 12; Joshua Thorp 6 and hannah Thorp 1.
A George Thorpe age 59 was buried at Ely Holy Trinity on 4 Apr 1854

The occupation of George on the baptisms of the children George and Tabitha was farmer. He was noted as a labourer at baptisms for Joshua and Hannah.
For Johns also farmer.
For Mary Ann, also farmer, but baptism records her full name as Mary Ann Tabitha.

Thanks Sue. Do you also have John 1832, Mary 1833 and Joshua 1835? It's a big gap between these three and the earlier children.

So perhaps George and Hannah isn't a PR error, given that George's occupation is also inconsistent with all the George and Susannah baptisms

Hi David
I can find no other George Thorpe marriages in the right time frame, only the one to Susanna. Perhaps George fancied a stint as a publican but it didn't work out. The name Tabitha seems a strong link. I would be inclined to think George and Susanna/Hannah were the same people.

thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments. I will keep working on it and hope something comes to light that proves William's parents.
-
Well miracles do happen. Color Sergeant William Thorpe was in the 15th foot regiment serving in Ceylon, Malta and Gibralter. There was another Thorpe in the same regiment producing children at the same time as William. I couldn't possibly have guessed that the other Sergeant Thorpe was his younger brother Joshua born to George and Susannah Thorpe of Ely. Obviously Joshua's descendants did know that! Without the internet I coudn't possibly have worked out that connection, so it has been 30 years in the waiting.

Hi
I just Googled Thorpe family, Ely, and came up with your messages on RootsChat. I'm v excited because I think we may be related! William Thorpe was my Great Great Grandfather and his son, John, was my Great Grandfather. If your ancestor, Tabitha Priscilla, became a Mort on marriage, then it's the same Thorpe family. Please let me know!!
Best wishes,
Beth

Hi Beth, yes we are definitely related. In fact it was myself and John Henry Thorpe's Grandson, Edwin (James Edwin) Thorpe who started doing all this back in 1981. Edwin died in 2004 but his widow Olive is still alive. I am trying to work out who you are, but I haven't got a 'Beth' in my tree so do tell me where you fit in. I have a spreadsheet with all the Thorpes on and quite a lot of info, so if you email me on (*) I can send it to you.
Best wishes
alison

well I am sure we are connected somewhere. Tabitha is a family name in the Thorpes of Ely. The earliest I have found is Tabitha Green who married Francis Thorpe (1st wife Elizabeth Fleet). 2nd wife Tabitha previously Greene AND nee Greene (1728-1802). Francis Thorpe was either buried 5 August 1809 or 4 April 1807 at Ely Holy Trinity. Your Tabitha is no doubt related to her as is my Great Grandmother Tabitha Priscilla Thorpe (Father William Thorpe born Ely and Gt Grandson of Tabitha and Francis).
Kegworth is in Leicestershire, and about a 100 miles from Ely. Could your William have come from there?

this is interesting:
go to this link if you can:
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=3F9nG8aFJ7MC&pg=PA20&lpg=PA20&dq=the+manor+of+kegworth&source=bl&ots=9kwenOOpwu&sig=utmwjAg9MLegSHwVvY_IAut0ETA&hl=en&sa=X&ei=wz8PT43ED4Pf8AO-ifHuAw&ved=0CDEQ6AEwAzgK#v=onepage&q=the%20manor%20of%20kegworth&f=false
the book seems to be called 'Ancestral roots of certain American colonists who came to America before 1700'
and the manor of Kegworth seemed to have something to do with the Greene family.... you need to look at the bottom of page 20.

ok, I know where you fit in my tree now and have just contacted you on ancestry!
