Hi can anyone help me with the following
1881 census for Widnes Lancashire
James Currie age 40 born Scotland bricklayer
Margaret Currie 39 wife born Scotland
James Currie 15 born Scotland
six more children Margetet Edward and Mary Agnes born Manchester and Jane Elizabeth and Annie born Widnes
I know from family members that Margaret was Margaret Lindsay and they came from the Glasgow area I have found a marriage on family search pilot for
James Currie and Margaret Lindsay 11 dec 1863 Bridgeton Glasgow and a birth for James Currie
10 oct 1865 with James Currie and Margaret Lindsay shown as parents
Can anyone help me with census details prior to 1881 for them both to perhaps help me any details of this couple that will help me
Thanks Carolyn

In 1891 (RG12/3011/127/44 ) the family is still in Widnes, but Margaret is a widow - let me know if you want the details

Unfortunately James Currie and Margaret Lindsay are not particularly uncommon names, so finding them in Scotland in 1861 or earlier is going to be tricky without their parents' names. Do you have (or can you get) these?

Hi
Sorry I dont know who their parents names
The only thing I know is that James was a bricklayer and the names of the children
James abt 1865 Margaret abt 1868 Edward 1870 Mary Agnes 1872 Jane 1875 Elizabeth 1877 Annie 1880
The only other info I have is the marriage took place in Bridgeton Glasgow and James was a bricklayer on both 1871 and 1881 census
Sorry that is all I have the marriage I have only just found on family search pilot

I.G.I also has a Thomas Currie born 16 Dec.1863 (5 days after marriage) with parents James Currie and Margaret Lindsay. It may be a coincidence with parents' names being the same but it is in Calton district (which is where James was born 2 years later).

Hi Carolyn
Do you want the 1891 details or have you already got them?
Linda
-
Hi
Thanks for that it would also put another male name in the family IF they stuck to using family names for their children
My line is from Margaret she went on to marry Edward Hynes in Widnes and both her daughter and grandaughter carried the name Margaret it was a thought that childrens names may show up on previous census returns as parents or brothers/sist

Hi
Thanks to Linda for the 1891 census details my Gt grandmother Margaret does not seem to be with the family I dont know if she was married by then if so her husband was Patrick Hynes/Hynnes and she did stay in Widnes after her marriage
Elaine I cant find the marriage details could be I am looking in the wrong place??
Is there any way with the information I have James or Margaret could be found on the earlier census returns or do you think this is as far as I can go
Thanks again
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn
This looks like Margaret's marriage to Patrick - from www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Marriages 3rd Qrt 1890
Currie Margaret & Hynes Patrick at Prescot Vol. 8b Pg. 1189
You can certainly work back hopefully on the lines of father James and mother Margaret Lindsay. You will need though to check the marriage entry on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to confirm their parents' names (Scottish marriage certs. also include full details for mothers).
Monica :)

I have had to give up this site will not let me access even when it sends me the user/password so I will have to give up on the marriage
Fingers crossed someone will find James and Margaret on the pre 1871 census for me
Cheers Carolyn

Hi Carolyn
Are you having problems getting onto the site or just accessing the record? If it's the latter, check that you have credits and that they haven't expired. If they have, you need to buy some more and that will also reactivate the expired ones. See
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/faqs/questions/index.aspx?1253

Hi the problem is accessing the site I already had a usercode but could not remember my password they sent me one but it still would not access I asked for usercode and password to be sent but again no go Then I tried with my husbands details it showed as ok but again it wont go any further I have not bought any credits yet I was going to do that when I knew I could get onto the site
Dont know what I am doing wrong I think I will have to take a trip to the local library and try to look at pre 1871 census returns to try and find them if he was still a bricklayer (if it was a farm lab I have hundreds) I may be able to find him as a single man with his parents

Hi Carolyn
We may have had some contact in the past but I lose track! James and Margaret were my great-grandparents, and their daughter, Jane, was my grandmother, so it would appear that our grandmothers were sisters. Jane was on the 1881 census but in 1891, living elsewhere in Widnes, she was working as a servant.
James and Margaret were married 11 December 1863 at St Mary's Chapel, Glasgow, by John McGinnis.
James's parents were Thomas Currie, Labourer (deceased) and Ellen McDonald.
Margaret's parents were Edward Lindsay, Labourer, (deceased) and Margaret Savage (deceased)
James's occupation was shown as Bricklayer, Journeyman.
Witnesses were Mary Ure and Edward Lindsay.
Hope this fills in some gaps!
Best wishes
Your cousin, Marie.

Hi Marie
Yes we have been in contact before and are the same family but my grandmother was Margaret Hynnes daughter of Margaret Currie so that makes my Gt Grandmother and your Grandmother sisters (I think that is right)
Keep in touch
Carolyn
