My grandmother is from Westport originally and her maiden name is Rees. I've checked the 1911 census but nothing came up. Anywhere else I could check?
-
What was her first name and how old would she have been in 1911?
-
She wasn't born until 1928, but her sisters, Margaret and Betty, would have been about two or three.
-
Do you know the names of the parents?
-
No :( I'd have to ask my Gran. She's coming over next week though, I can ask her then :)
-
If we had a bit more detail it might be possible to find the family in 1911 census but searching with first name and age, etc. in case the surname has been mistranscribed.
I did take a quick look at civil index but didn't have much luck there either.
-
Surname not in Westport 1901 family roots either.

Hello NessaF,
Family Search pilot site: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
shows these 3 Westport births for Rees in the indexes:
Percy b 1912; Elizabeth Margaret 1915 and Margery Frances 1920.
There are few marriages shown- none for the right time but Elizabeth Margaret's is there for 1939 so perhaps the family moved there after 1911 but stayed there then. :)

There don't seem to be any births anywhere in Ireland for a 'female' Rees in 1928 so I'm wondering if the details we are using to search for information might not be correct.
-
I supposed we had better wait aghadowey - I'm too impatient sometimes. ::)
I agree with you and also it seems strange that the two names Betty and Margaret come in the one child - plus also if they had been about 2 or 3 in 1911, it's a big gap till 1928. I know it happens- did in my some of my father's family but there were lots between the oldest and youngest :D
-
My great grandmother was 45 when my gran was born. Very unusual, I know, but it's not unheard of.
That's probably them, my gran is always going on about her brother Percy, he used to alwayshave to help her with her maths homework.
-
I found them! Although there's a mistake on my grandmother's birth cert, it says 1927, she was born in 1928. Exactly the right name and exactly the right place though so it's probably just a mistake.
-
A bit confused here- I didn't find any females with the surname Rees registered in 1928- is it the actual certificate you have (with a mistake on the date of birth) or do you mean there's a mistake in the index? If it is the index, a person born in 1928 could not have been registered in 1927.
-
Hello,m
yes there is a 1927- Joan Vivien Rees b 1st quarter 1927. :D I assume that's your grandmother.
So back to the original post- you know now why none of them show in 1911 census, born much later.
You could get your gt grandparents names from your gran and then you may find them in 1911 and get a marriage certificate for them and then work back.
This site: http://www.iancantwell.com/MOTDPlacename.pdf which, I think, has lists re Memorials of the Dead, just as 'Rees, Cherry Cottage, Westport buried in the Church of Ireland graveyard, Westport.
Looking up Cherry Cottage, this site has a picture and a bit of information

You are fortunate that you have gran to give you more details.
good luck

Strange because when I searched for 'Rees' the other day with no first name in search box that one didn't come up (although I've re-checked the search and it's there now)- wonder if anything to do with LDS fixing Pilot site.
If the 1927 birth is correct then she would have been born late 1926/early 1927 not in 1928.
-
Hi,
no I didn't see it either aghadowey- just the three I mentioned. I wondered if I had restricted the time span but I don't think it works like that :-\
-
I always search civil index with just a name and use 'place', 'dates', etc. to refine the results so I don't think that was the problem.
-
I think you are right- there has been some sort of update. I looked for my mother in law and she wasn't there but she is today. :D

I grew up in Westport, and I can recall my parents telling me that Rees lived in "Cherry Cottage" which is in Rosbeg. It is a beautiful house still. I think it may have operated as a Guest House once. Next time I am out that way I will take a photograph for you.
I have been to "Holy Trinity Cemetery" but have not noticed any headstone for Rees there. Its a very small cemetery quite near to the Church Of Ireland.
If I come across anything I will let you know

In the new Westport Church of Ireland cemetery, taken from Memorials of the Dead by the author. It is the only reference to this family by the author. By the way the 1901 census is now online. The Valuation Office Revision Lists will assist in when the family moved to Cherry Cottage. The Westport Church of Ireland Registers would also be useful as would newspapers covering the various dates of death
Two associated memorials

2) In loving remembrance
