Would anyone be able to look up a Samuel Davis for me in the Stroud Archives. His son was William Davis born 1775, married 10th July 1808 to Martha Chandler and had four children (Elizabeth, Thomas, Sarah and Harriet). But I am trying to find out when Samule was born and I think it was 3rd December 1753 and who he married? Could anyone help?

Hi Dorey
The only Samuel Davis born 1753 with a similar birthdate I can find is
one born in Randwick, Glos and was christened on 7th December 1753.
He died according to this record on 26th Jan 1847.
He married a Mary Hill on 29th October 1777 and his parents
were a Samuel Davis and a Elizabeth Howse.
This is on the Family.Search.org the free Mormon site.
Do you think this is your Samuel?

??,
I assume you obtained the William D marriage data from the GFHS CD of GLS marriages and I suppose his birth date was calculated from census info. Did you notice that the 3 Dec. 1753 entry in the IGI was extracted from Randwick records so is acceptably accurate.
Searching at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start for the marriage of Samuel Davis gives a marriage to a Mary Hill. The source of the information is given as LDS film number 856964 so has a reliable provenance which can be verified.

Chas
The info you've been given seems to be from a pedigree resource file with no source given.

Hi Chas
Are you speaking to me with your reply or trying to explain to Dorey???
I have only done about 200 replies to try and help people on here and
it doesnt compare to your 1500 and odd. When you are saying "suppose" it sounds as though you are shouting at me. All I did was try and help Dorey
but wasnt too sure so thought I made it clear to Dorey but I hoped my
information was correct!!
So although I have been on here awhile, we are always learning and hoping the information we are giving is correct

Hi Chas
When you are saying "suppose" it sounds as though you are shouting at me.
Sandy,
I thought it was obvious that I was talking to Dorey so I cannot understand why you seem to be so upset. I use the name given at the end of requests so no name = ?? usually :D
If I'd wanted to SHOUT that's what I'd do in accordance the accepted nettiquette ;D
You might have noticed in any of my posts that I very seldom give specific replies to anybody. Whenever possible I give the URL where the info. can be found - that makes it more interesting for the searcher. If I do give specific info. about a birth, marriage or burial I always give decent provenance so that verification is possible as explained in Genuki's GS page. I would never even think of quoting anything found in a pedigree file if it did not give a verifiable source.

Chas

I would like to thank you both for helping.
The information you have obtained is invaluable.
I started my research in 2004 and in 2006 and then came to a dead end. We actually came to the Gloucester Records office in 2006 and I found an actual marriage entry in the Parish records for William Davis's marriage 10th July 1808 to Martha Chandler I could not find his birth. I was looking around 1775 but I think I might have the wrong information as I think he died in Randwick 23 November 1825 aged 66.
Would anyone be able to confirm this. The William Davis I am looking for had children born in Randwick, Elizabeth born 09 Jan 1811, Thomas 25 April 1813, Sarah 22 January 1816 and Harriot 19 April 1918.
Could anyone confirm this for me?
Also because I am not as organised as I should be. I get a bit lost with all the references but I did get most of this information from the Randwick Sources (which is a great website) and the Gloucester Records by copying the Parish Records. I am amazed that people of RootsChat can obtained this information in the record speed that they do. Can you point me in the right direction of which sites I should use in future?
Much appreciated by your efforts.

D,
The best site there is for help and guidance is Genuki where you will find more help, guidance and links than anybody could tell you via this forum: see http://www.genuki.org.uk/
Another good way of finding help is by having a look at previous messages because many may be asking for similar help as you and the advice might be just what you need for your own research.
