Hello: I posted a similar post a few days ago which I can't seem to see to I am re-posting now. I am searching for further information on my great grandparents, Walter Fowler b: 1854 in Axminster and his wife Harriott Brown b: 1855 in Whitchurch and died in Axminster 1893. I cannot seem to go back any further with my search so if anyone has any other suggestions for me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Susan

Hello All: Thank you for the leads and the great information you have provided. Hanes, I wasn't able to find anything on Harriott (Brown) Fowler born 1855 Whitchurch so I was just thinking maybe I could find something in the Parish records. When I go to any of the sites that have been posted for me, I cannot seem to find what you people find. I must be doing something wrong as I always get "no matches". The only information I can seem to access in on Ancestry. Just a beginner and just learning. Thanks so much for everyone's help. Susan

Hi Susan,
Hawkchurch being on the border means in some records it will come under Dorset and others Devon. Since you are looking for earlier records I expect they will be in Dorset. The records I have provided below are all Dorset Records.
http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/genuki/DOR/Hawkchurch/
William is with Typhena's family in 1851
HO107/1862 Folio 328 Page 10
Sedgecroft
Hawkchurch Dorset
CASE Thomas Head 74 mar b Whitechurch pauper late spinner
CASE Keziah Wife 66 Mar b Hawkchurch
CASE Tryphena Dau 23 Unm b Hawkchurch Shoe thread spinner
CASE George Grandson 1 b Hawkchurch
FOWLER William Lodger 39 unm b Wotton Ag lab
I suspect he is labouring in Wooton Fitzpaine in 1841 aged 30 so no help there with his family.
Tryphemia CASE was baptised in Hawkchurch on the 14 Dec 1828 (born 28 Mar) daughter of Thomas a labourer and Kezia
possible marriage
Thomas CASE widower OTP = Kezia BENNETT OTP 15 July 1815 Beaminster witnesses Jonathan Bennett and John Marsh (the parish clerk)
and this appear to be the likely first marriage
Thomas CASE = Susanna SYMS widow of Bemister 18 Apr 1804 Whitchurch Canonicorum witnesses Joshua Case and Geo W Poole.
Looking at the IGI Thomas and Susanna had two children in Hawkchurch

Hi Kris: Thank you so much for the information you provided. I was wondering when you go to that particular site, are you accessing printed documents? I have not been able to get any information from that site yet. I see the reference numbers you have included and was just wondering what material you are finding this information. Thanks again. Susan

Hi Susan,
I am sorry, I am having trouble understanding what it is you are unable to do. You mentioned the reference numbers I provided. If so I did not provide a link for census entries, hence my confusion. I provided a link to give a little information on the Parish of Hawkchurch and another link to the IGI.
Do you mean the census reference HO107/1862 Folio 328 Page 10?
These are the reference details for the family in the 1851 census. They would allow you to view the original either via a subscription site (such as Ancestry/Find my Past etc.) or using a CD Rom or to order a copy of the image from the records office. You could also view the original at a library where they have Ancestry Library edition available. These are the only ways to access original census entries. There are transcripts of some censuses available at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl depending on the county and year you are after - you will need to check for coverage. http://freecen.rootsweb.com/statistics.html Unfortunately very little available for Dorset but you will find some transcriptions available via the OPC site http://www.opcdorset.org/index.htm
If you are referring to baptisms from http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true (These can be extracted records - transcribed from the original entries in the parish registers - generally quite accurate. On the IGI we also find submitted entries - these entries have been submitted by members of the LDS Church and do need to be verified.
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Kris: Thanks for your message. Being a beginner with this genealogy interest, I haven't quite found my way yet. Obviously, I need to expand my search sources as other people seem to be finding so much more than I can find with greater details such as occupations being included. I do appreciate everyone's help from RootsChat, this is an amazing site with amazingly helpful people. Susan

Susan,
The Registration District for the 1861 Census is Bridport
Harriet has a younger sister Sarah, age 3, born Whitechurch, on the same Census. The birth of a Sarah Brown was registered Dec 1858 5a 365 Bridport
The birth of a Harriet Brown was registered
a. Dec 1854 Bridport 5a 379
b. Jun 1857 Bridport 5a 297
Might be worth investing in Certificate a. possibly?
regards
-
Susan,
Omitted to add

Hanes: How kind of you to send this information to me. This will really help as I was at the wall with this search. I will certainly pick up this search now with this new information. Could you tell me what source you found this census on, please, as I can't understand why I couldn't find this previously? Thanks so very much. I really, really appreciate this information. Regards, Susan
-
Hi Susan,
These census entries have been transcribed and are freely available through the OPC sites for Wooton Fitzpaine and Netherbury.
http://www.opcdorset.org/index.htm
The easiest way to view the original entries is to take out a subscription or visit a library with access to Ancestry Library edition. You will find most major libraries world wide offer this service.
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Susan,
Are William Fowler and Tryphenia Case in your direct line???
Jan
-
Hi Jan: Yes they are in my direct line. William Fowler is my g.g. grandfather. Are you related to this line as well? Susan
-
Not mine but my son's by my 1st marriage.
A half sister of Tryphinia, Mary Case b 1806 Hawkchurch daughter of Thomas Case and his 1st wife Susannah Syms married Jacob Jeffery. Their daughter Honor, b 1850 Hawkchurch, married Amos Bowditch--they had 8 children who never strayed far from Hawkchurch.
Tryphinia's brother Robert b 1821 went to the Channel Islands where he married on Herm before moving to Guernsey. His children traveled to the US --I am in contact with some of their descendants.
William's parents were Henry Fowler 1775 and Maria Powell 1793.

Hi Jan: Thanks for your message and the interesting information. I can't quite follow the line but I haven't had time to think about it enough yet. I really appreciated the names of the parents of William as I didn't have the name Maria as the wife of Henry, so thanks very much for that. My grandmother, Annie Ellen Fowler b. 1878 or 1879, Axminster was the daughter of Walter Fowler b. 1854 Hawkchurch and Harriott Brown b. 1855 Bridport. She left Axminster and emigrated to Canada when she was in her 30's. I hope we can exchange further information, perhaps using the personal message option. Regards, Susan

The answer to your question is --
the Hawkchurch Records are held by the Devon Record Office in Exeter while the records for the adjoining parishes of Wootton Fitzpaine, Whitchurch Canonicorum and Thorncombe are held by the Dorset Record Office in Dorchester.
It can take several trips on the A30/35 to find and verify you have the right family.

Hi Susan and Jan,
William Fowler is a direct descendant of mine, his son Walter was my grandad's grandad...! I'm slowly progressing towards an extensive tree, and would like to share information with you both. Please feel free to message me (Jan I think you may have already made contact through another site!)
-
Hello Hannah: I would be very glad to exchange information that I have regarding the Fowler family with you. If you could provide me with your email address, we could correspond through a private message rather than this site. Regards, Susan
-
Hello Susan, Jan and Hannah,
I too am connected to this family tree! My father in-law's grandfather is Edwin Fowler, son of Walter Fowler and Harriet Brown, and brother to Annie (your grandmother Susan!) and I presume your great grandfather or grandmother Hannah? I came across the forum when doing a random search for the name Tryphena Case (was really just looking for the origin of the name as it is so unusual!). I am very interested in family history but this is the first time I have ever really got involved in looking back, have just come to the end of a free 14day trial with findmypast.com. Hopefully you will still all receive this message - I would love to get in contact with you all to see what else you know about the family?! It's amazing that we are all part of the same family tree!! Hope to hear from you,
Emma

Hello EmFowler: So good to find your message. It showed up in my "Junk Mail" folder and it was lucky it caught my eye and I didn't delete it as I normally do. Annie Ellen Fowler was my grandmother and she did have a brother named Edwin. I have her birthdate as 26 July 1879 and Edwin's baptism 4 Oct 1885. My grandmother immigrated to Canada in 1913 (she was 34 years old) and she met and married my Grandfather, Herbert Dixon Robinson. They had two children, my Uncle Alfred and my mother, Ivy Mary. One of the interesting facts I found when I was searching was that Annie had worked for a wealthy family in Hawkchurch named "Patterson". Apparently he was a cattle dealer and Annie and her sister, Elizabeth (Bessie) were employed with the family. Apparently he took my Grandmother on a trip to South America as an "au pair". I think that trip must have made her realize there was an exciting world beyond Hawkchurch, Axminster. She was also found on an 1911 Census as a Hotel Manageress in Bloomsbury, Coram Street. She then headed to Canada on her own. I would be interested to learn what you have discovered about Edwin. No room left on this message box. Susan
