Hello Ticker,
Could you be sure, to be sure, that the COTTRELLs may not have come from IRELAND?
I note that there has not been a response to your post.
Can you connect to any of these maternal Grand-parents of mine??

Hi Bruce
Thanks for the reply.
I can't be sure the COTTRELLS don't come from Ireland - they could well do.
None of the names you mention tie in with the names I have I'm afraid. If I find any link I'll let you know.
Best wishes

Hello Ticker
I have some Cotterills who lived in Tamworth in the 19c.
They were Daniel Cotterill born c 1797 who married Mary Betteridge in c 1820 and their family.
I would be interested to hear from you if you think there's a connection.
Best wishes

Hello Alikay,
Congratulations on your first post. Keep them coming.
I have not been able to link your COTTERILL line with my COTTRELL.
There may have been a difference in origins as my COTTRELLs were from Ireland.
I think the COTTERILLs may have come from Scotland.
Being a humble male of the species, I stand to be corrected

I have a John Cotterill who came to Scotland from England, possibly Lancashire before 1870. I can only get back to 1840 with any certainty however, as my family have not yet been found in any of the censuses in England. The man in question has stated birthplace England on censuses, and one poorhouse record states place of birth as Oldham, Lancashire England. Oldham didn't even exist when he was born (about 1840-42).
To complicate matters he had one son, Frederick Cotterill, born 1883 in Southampton. However John had been living in Scotland for at least 13 years by then, and had a number of children born there....then went back to Scotland and had another child by 1886.
So I am thinking...why was he in Southampton when the child was born? Why go there if rellies were in Lancashire? Work? He was a hammerman...but it seems an awfully long way for a Scot to go to get work, so I am thinking family must have been there. And yet....can't find anyone!!!
So my Cotterills are very elusive and are driving me batty.
Good luck, everyone else!

I have discoverd a photograph of my ggg grandmother Lois Cottrell who was born in about 1813. The photo must have been taken about 1900 I suppose. She is the elderly lady on the right.
I would still like to hear from anyone who has a connection.

We have Cottrells from Staffs,
My partners mother's mother is Leonora Cottrell (nee Grice) and she married Frank Bryan Cottrell, who was born in Bourneville 05 March 1926. I think we have generations further back than that, but they're on my home PC and I'm at work! Will post them later.

Will post them later.
Thanks - I look forward to it!

Ah, it seems I was mistaken, we're generations back on Grice.

I have Cottrells on two sides of my family - one branch being from Devon and the other from Gloucstershire (traced only back to the early 19th / late 18th century). Anyone else possibly connected? There are possible connections to Somerset on both sides.

Hi Matthew and Bruce and all,
I am descended from the Burridges and Cotterells. Your conversation was quite a while ago and I'm new to family history but I would be interested in any information about these families if you are willing to help me. Theresa Cotterell who married Benjamin Burridge were my 3X gt grandparents.
Kind regards,
:)

Hi! This might sound a bit funny, but I bought a huge wooden box of old art postcards from a charity shop last weekend, and - out of curiosity - I've been tracing the original owner, Cora Elizabeth Grice (nee Evans) married to a Leon & mother to Cynthia & Leonora. The collection includes cards sent by both daughters and a granddaughter - Anna. The box may have been given away intentionally, but I'd love to hear from you if you're interested in it - and I'd love to know how the box ended up in Penarth (South Wales, nr Cardiff).
All the best and I hope that you see this one day!
