In the 16th century the Halls of Otterburn were the headsmen of the surname of Hall, the chief surname in the Regality of Redesdale. I don't know of any published family tree, but there are mentions in Border history.
John Hall of Otterburne 1537 represented Redesdale at a meeting of the Pilgrimage of Grace rebels, but the Redesdale men restricted their participation to local plundering, and after the rebellion's failure John Hall was one of those who offered to pay compensation. He was one of those hired as Underkeepers in 1540 on the principle of setting a thief to catch a thief.
In 1568 Richard Hall of Otterburn was buying land in the area.
In 1630 John Hall of Otterburn gentleman purchased Fallowlees.
While in prison awaiting trial Mad Jack Hall remarked to a fellow prisoner "Our fathers gained land in Cromwell's time as sequestrators of rebels, now we are going to lose them for being rebels."
There is a marriage in St Nicholas Newcastle 1st April 1703 of Mr John Hall Elsdon [the Otterburn parish] and Mrs Elizabeth Bowes, Bigg market
The Rise and Fall of the English Highland Clans by Ralph Robson gives a lot of detail about the Halls of Redesdale.

Have you considered the 1841 and 1851 census. William Hall mason aged approx 60 and wife Rachel approx 55 is living in St John's lane in Newcastle with son James approx 30 a coach painter and daughter Ann 25.
The couple are missing in 1851 but James is still living at the same address born Belford Northumberland married to a Gateshead girl with 2 lodgers in the coach bulding trade.

Peter...re the census....shaken, tossed, turned, flipped and everything in between. I have a list running for the HALL's of Durham and NBL since 1999. It targets the North east of England for the various reasons that HALL's are so common in number that overseas lists for HALL's tend to get swamped especially with the USA - see http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hall_nhbl
The DNA search so far has placed my HALL's in Newcastle, Belford and possibly Alnwick - a new list so is just starting our...has an excellent gedcomviewer program with great options including search engines linked to various other places such as LDS. The google search link structures the quieres in many different ways to gain the best results possible see www.hall-dna.info Bear with me as this is a new site and a LOT of work still needs to be done
As for the magistrate HALL I have come across material about that person - I have checked the London Times and 18thy century English newspapers without luck so far. I have a thought I know where the material is and will check within the next day or so

Found the source
Do a google search....make sure you select books from the top in place of a general search
I entered the words "mad Jack" make sure you use quote marks as this keeps it as a quote and not two seperate words
I also entered hall also as an extra word and these yield over 700 hits
tip quote marks makes the term a quotation for searching
a + sign makes it an essential word or phrase to search for
a - sign makes the word to be excluded
so you could enter it like this +"mad jack" +hall +Otterburn
That yield 33 hits

Percy Hedley was a major historian in Northumberland. He made masses of notes from all types of pre -1837 records about numerous local families including the Halls. Her also made pedigrees of many families.
They are held at the Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn see

Thought he was 'Mad' Jack Hall!! Family originated up Redesdale - not far from Otterburn. The hotel that calls itself Otterburn Castle is a rebuild on an old site. Castle ruins on the A68 still very prominent.
My descent is from Jacob Hall c.1727, Kirkwhelpington - 14 children. Father probably James and his father, by family legend, Mad Jack. Family tree (in book form) from him, through son Thomas (b.1768) to current done by a family member about 30 years ago. Now trying to move back from James (possible wife Elizabeth Robson) to prove descent.

My husband's mother's family are Halls and descend from "Mad Jack" in Otterburn. Have been up to Elsdon and Otterburn and have found out a fair amount about the family. Also went to Kew and found not only Mad Jack's speech written in pencil and night before he was executed, but also an envelope of bids from people wanting to buy his land some time after it was confiscated. Have loads of writing on the family back to John Hall 1735 and a family tree...not done by me showing the connection right back to Mad Jack. Would love to be in contact with other Hall "chasers"!!!

I would be very interested in the information & tree.

Father's name John also. Lived at Otterburn Hall. Was a magistrate. Was executed at Tyburn, London 13 Jul 1716, during the First Scottish Uprising. Would appreciate information on his family - wife, name unknown (possibly Hutchison???) and son named Robert, born 1700, died 1780. Much appreciated.

An older Otterburn Hall existed at least as early as 1777. At that time, the Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland asked the hall's owner, Henry Ellison, for permission to erect a monument on the field to honor his ancestor who died during the Battle of Otterburn. Ellison denied the request and raised a monument himself which included an obelisk, possibly an architrave removed from Otterburn Hall's kitchen fireplace, which was placed into a socketed battle stone. Hello,
My GGG grandparents are Hall's from Belford and Bamburgh. I would love to find a connection to other Hall's, I also understand there may be link to Wooler.
My family did not make it easy for me as Hall's from Belford married Hall's from Ireland, just to make my searching that little bit harder.
Would love to hear back, Angeline x

Does anyone know if someone from this particular Hall family went to either Northern Ireland (Ulster) or America mid 1600s/early 1700s? We are presently in Elsdon looking for connections to the Potts family of Durtrees (near Otterburn). Grateful for any leads!
