I'm trying to research into the family of a George Howden born c 1772 the only trouble is the only birth place I have for him is Scotland. Would anybody have any clues as to where to start. The only IGI I found was for a Baptism of a George Howden for 1772 but the birth for this one is 1767. The only other piece of info I have, is that he did at least have 1 brother Robert born c 1773. Any pointers whatsoever I would be most grateful for.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Dobbin
Welcome to Rootschat.
Have you looked for a Robert Howden baptism in about 1773to see if there was one who was born the same place as the George born 1767 with same parents names?
Did George stay in Scotland or did he move?

Hi Ben
Thanks so much for your quick reply.
I have looked for Robert on IGI but have not had much luck with him either.
Both George and Robert moved to Liverpool. George remained there until his death but I don't know about Robert.
I don't know if they went to Liverpool as children or as adults.
I am very stuck now on this one.
Thanks again Ben

Hi
The 1841 census has a George Howden living in Walton on the Hill, West Derby, Liverpool with wife Ann and children. Parish records might give baptisms of the children, and possibly George's marriage if he had lived there for some time? Unfortunately all it says for Ann's place of birth is not born in county.
There is also a Robert Howden living in Finsbury, Middlesex, born Scotland c.1771 - possibly your Robert.
Good luck

Hi
Thanks for that, yes the George on the 1841 census at West Derby is the George I'm looking into and I do have some Parish records for his children etc and his marriage, but I m trying to find parents for him. Will have a look at the Robert in Finsbury.
Thanks so much.

A George Howden was born 14 April 1774 in Channelkirk, berwick, Scotland son of John Howden and Isobel Lothian.
And a George Howden was born 2nd May 1772 in Gladsmuir, East Lothian son of John Houden and Jane Ladlie. Baptised 10th May 1772.
Have you come across these two baptisms before?

Hi Coombs
Thanks for your response. I don't know but I'm thinking that the first one is too late for the George I'm looking for because I know he died aged 88 in 1860.
I have seen the second one, which I did rather hope for, but when I did IGI on this it did give me a baptism for 10th May 1772 with parents John Howden and Janet Ladlie, but it gave me a birth of 26 April 1767 and this I know is too early.
Now I did wonder whether there could perhaps be two children mixed up here because I have found that once or twice before with an IGI, and maybe one had died young.
I do have a line of Georges, and Johns though so this would be quite apt. Can I please ask you about the birth you found of 2 May 1772. Where could I access details for this.
Thank you so much.

Its from the FamilySearch Pilot site but it is just an index. You cannot access the original image. It just gives reference details for the microfilm reel I think.

Okay
Thank you for your help, I'll take another look at it all.

Hi
You may be clutching at straws here as the IGI is not full coverage by any means so your George could be born in a parish that is not on it. Does the 1851 census just give Scotland as place of birth? If he was Scottish he may well have followed their naming pattern for his children so that might give you some clues.

Hi Andrea
Thanks.
I know the IGI does not have full coverage and on each census it does just give his birth as Scotland. I realise it is a mammoth task that I have in hand.
the only clue that I have with names is that the male side seemed to follow through, John, George, John, George etc
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
I'd looked for George on Scotland's People a while ago, the best match I came up with was the one for the baptism in May 1772 to John Houden and Janet Ladlie, the birth date is given as May 2nd. Interestingly one of the witnesses is a William Houden and William is the name of one of George's sons later on in Liverpool. Also when George marries Mary Petty in Liverpool in 1798 he is down as Houden, and again in 1814 when he marries Ann Maria Bennett, although some of his children are recorded as Howden others are Houden. I don't feel that I have proved the connection enough to actually put John and Janet onto my family tree, and I can't see how I ever will prove it but I am willing to pencil them in with question marks. Hope this is of some help.
