Title: Duffy Sisters
Post by: NormanG on Tuesday 18 May 10 06:10 BST (UK)
I am researching for descendants of my 1st cousins Mary Kate Duffy and Ellen Duffy both emigrated to the USA around mid 1920 I do know Ellen arrived New York on 20th April 1925 on the vessel La Conia no definate info regarding Mary Kate movement. they moved from the county of Roscommon, Briarfield/Ballaghaderreen Ireland. There parents names were Michael and Bridget Duffy (maiden name Hunt) I do believe the final destination for Ellen is Cambridge USA.

I would be very grateful for any assistance coming my way.

Hi Karenlee

Firstly thank you for your wonderful response.

You may be right because I did have info passed onto me that a Mary Kate Ballaghaderreen Roscommon born 1905/06 travelled on the Baltic to New York but no mention of arrival date.
The only Briarfield I am aware of is in Roscommon not Cork possibly there could be a recording error.
Just for the records according to the 1911 Irish census taken April Mary Kate 5, Ellen 4 they also had another sister Bridget 2 I am there brother born Aug 1911
Is there any possibility of obtaining Ellen address in Cambridge.

No worries Norman.  Happy if that has helped at all.  I will do some more trawling and see what else I can find.

The full transcript for Ellen reads as follows...

New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957

From C O B H Queenstown Ireland 12th April 1925
To New York 20th April 1925

DUFFY Ellen Single Female aged 17 Domestic Servant

From Ballaghadereen Ireland
Contact in Ireland ... Father
Michael DUFFY
Briarfield Lisacul Ballaghedereen
Final Destination New York

There is an Ellen DUFFY servant in the 1830 US Census in Mount Vernon Westchester New York.. her age is given as 26 and birth year as 1904.... that's a bit too far out for my liking so am not convinced she is the right one.  Both her and Mary could well have married.... which will make it a bit harder to find them...

Cheers

I made an error on my last correspondence.
I am not the brother born Aug. 1911 that was my father. Mary and Ellen are my 1st cousins.
I was born 1937 and adopted only in the last three years I have manage to trace my true heritage.  Finding if there is any descendants of the two cousins is the last part of the jigsaw.

Whats the best way for me to take the next step to try and verify if indeed the information we have can be followed up. Sorry I am a novice in this area and would appreciate any suggestions.

Again thank you for your wonderful support.

Norman

The next step for you is to start a search for a marriage or death for either of these women.  Not being really sure of where they settled in the USA makes it a bit more difficult but knowing their parents names and their approx birth years is a big help.

It might be a good idea to start a new thread on the US board that asks specifically for this informationon ... also, have you read checked the US Resources board at the top of US Main board, that might have some useful links to help you.

Hi Norman.

I have been looking but so far haven't found anything .... sorry.

I just have a question.  If Mary Kate and Ellen were your dad's sisters, wouldn't that make them your aunts instead of 1st cousins?

I have some information about Bridget Hunt's family. Her parents were Thomas Hunt (1831 - 1907) and Catherine Towey (1833 - 1894). They were from Urlaur, which is in Mayo but only a few kilometers from Briarfield. Thomas Hunt's parents were Brian (or Bernard) Hunt (1798 - 1892)and Elizabeth Kelly (1799 - 1872).

Apparently Mary Kate and Ellen Duffy came to the US about 1925. Bridget (or Bridie) stayed behind and then joined them in the 1950s after their father died.
