Hi there

I am linked to the Redfords and Reids in this area and have a friend linked to the Mackays.  I think my Redfords married one of your Pirie's way back so we are probably very very very very distantly related!!

We have some details of Slater and Mair ancestors, from the 1850s (Cullen), and 1880s (Portnockie).  What is the best way of passing it on?  We are new to RootsChat.

Hi,this is probably a long shot but here goes.I'm trying to trace my Grandmother's birth, her name was Isabella Emslie Slater she married  Alexander Hodge and I know that in 1914 they were in Alloa. The most hopeful lead I have is from the 1881 census,  Isabella E Slater aged 7 daughter of Bathie Slater (head of household), Low St Port Soy.

There was also a Mary aged 11 and a Jeanie aged 5.

Have you come across this family and if so do you have any futher info.

Sorry but I don't think we have any connection - my husbands family is from Banffshire or Morayshire,  and the names you mention are not familiar ones.

...gfindlay... My Paternal Grandfather was Joseph Addison of Cullen, Banffshire.  A Herring fisherman, he was also a licensed steam engineer and owned and operated the fishing boat 'Shining Star' out of Cullen @ 1920(+/-).  He married Georgina Wood of Portnockie and emigrated to Canada, settling in Windsor, Ontario, where Georgina and their two sons (Edwin and MY father George Wood) joined him a year later.  They emigrated together as a family to Detroit, Michigan shortly thereafter.

This won't help you but my very first 'proper' boyfriend was from Portsoy staying with his sister in Maidenhead Berks.  He was a Mair and seeing the name again brought back happy memories of a holiday staying with his mother in Portsoy in about 1958!

I have just found out that my grandad's cousin Margaret Jane Wood "park" was married to William Mair "shanker" - his parents were George Mair and Euphemia Mair (M/S Pirie) from Portknockie.

William died when the Zulu fishing boat "Evangeline" was caught in a storm in Jan 17th 1905 just off Stornay with all the crew losing their lives.

Anyone got a connection ?

Cheers, Carole

My great-great-great-great-grandparents were George Gardiner and Isabella Findlay. They married 11/7/1841 I think. They had all girls. There was Jane, Janet (Jessie) Elsie, Margaret and some I cannot remember. My direct line, Jessie, died 19/2/1924 widow of John Jappy. Does anyone have any relation to this?

I have Alexander Wood, son of William Wood and Helen Slater, who married my second cousin four times removed, Helen Leslie.

Alexander was born in Portknockie on 24 December 1814 and baptised in Cullen on 31 December 1814, and died at Blackhillock, Deskford on 26 October 1905. He was buried two days later in Deskford Kirkyard.

Alexander and Helen were married on 19 November 1840 in Keith. Helen died in 1869 and on 4 November 1870 Alexander married Barbara Gracie, who survived him.

There were three children of the marriage, and 18 known grandchildren.

I'd be interested in knowing what became of their son William Leslie Wood, born about 1843. He was a bank clerk in 1861, and a witness at his sister's wedding in 1863. Thereafter I have found no trace of him.

Also interested in exchanging notes on descendants of daughters Ann Hay Wood, who married Charles Nicoll, and Margaret Wood, who married William Geddes.

Hello Forfarian,

A short note to let you know that I have checked my tree and the names you are interested in dont match anybody.

I believe there were a lot of Wood families in this area at that time.

Maybe some of the other people on the discussion group will have matches for your names.

Regards

Bill

I'm a volunteer with Tayvalley Family History Society and we have been asked to try to trace descendants of William Pirie and Jane Tulloch. Their son, William  b 1897, Forres, was killed in action on 6/6/1918 in France, serving with the Seaforth Highlanders.  He had a brother, George who was in RAMC as a dispenser (of medicines) and a sister, Jessie Morrison Pirie.
In 1920 George's address was 29 North Road, Forres.  Try as I might I can't find the death of William Pirie sen or Jane Tulloch!!!
Any help will be most appreciated.

Jane Tulloch, wife of William Pirie and formerly of 29 North Road, Forres, died at 523 East 156th Street, New York, USA on 31 March 1929. This is from LIBINDX at http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp and refers to a death notice in the Elgin Courant and Courier of 3 May 1929. There doesn't seem to be a matching notice for William Pirie.
