Title: orphan in Wantage
Post by: Squirrel Nutkin on Sunday 16 May 10 16:22 BST (UK)
Hello

I have come to a dead end trying to find out which orphanage my great-grandmother was sent to in 1890s. Anyone got any ideas? Family knowledge says it was St Mary's Home Wantage, which it turns out was for penitents. (She had stolen some money from an aunt.) However, St Mary's keeps no records and the time she would have been there falls between censuses. I'm wondering whether county records would hold any helpful information, but have no idea where to start. Any ideas?

Hi SN

I have asked a lady at the museum in Wantage to look at your query and see if she can help.

Thanks Cello, that's great.

I actually saw that thread about St mary's on google before i had come across Rootschat. I wonder whether my great granny might have known the people mentioned as the dates would coincide.

I also contacted St Mary's direct, but sadly, for genealogists at any rate, they didn't keep any records of who was there. Perhaps the museum might have some other ideas for tracking her down...
