Help wanted please:
Martha MONTEITH (b. 1893) was born in Ireland, Co. Donegal.
She was still in Ireland in 1911 (have got a copy of the 1911 Irish census).
However, I'm trying to find out what happened to her after that.
We think she went to Scotland (date & location unknown) and married somebody called MUNGALL.
Can anybody help me with dates / names / locations please?
Thank you

Hi
The Scotland's People web site ( www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk ) has a marriage for Martha Monteith to a Hugh Mungall in Blythswood, Glasgow in 1919.

The same site has the death of a Martha Mungall (other surnames Monteith) ~
1970 Aged 77 in Blackridge, West Lothian.

Hi Gadget
Thank you for this.
Do you know if they had any children?
-
That's a bit more difficult because I can't do a search on Mumgall/Monteith, just Mungall.
I'll have a quick look.

Sorry - just too many Mungalls - 48 between 1919 and 1930 in Lanarkshire but none in Blythewswood. No obvious names stand out either.
What was her mother's maiden name?

Answering my own question - Martha Kane.
Martha was 23 in 1919.
Hugh's address was Linlithgow so I'll check that side :)

Hi Gadget
Really appreciate your help on this.
Martha's mother was Martha KANE. Martha was 1 of 8 children. Siblings were called James, William, John, Thomas, Annie, Elizabeth (Lizzy) and Donald. Donald was Martha's twin and their mother died whilst giving birth to them.
Grandparents names also include Robert and Jane.

Got four deaths of Mungalls with mother's name Monteith
1978 Robina Downie, aged 55 in Bathagate
1995 Andrew Monteith aged 66 in Bathgate
2001 Agnes Robertson aged 66 in Bathgate
2006 Martha Monteith aged 84 in West Lothian

Thank you for this.

It looks like Robina married a McGhie, Agnes a Bell and Martha an Ashton, if that's any help :)
-
Confused now.
I was assuming the surname at death was their married name.
For example, Robina Mungall married somebody called Downie. But you've now said she married a McGhie.
-
Sorry - I just gave their first names so Robina Downie was Robina Downie Mungall other name McGhie, Agnes was Agnes Robertson Mungall, other name Bell and Martha Montheith was Martha Monteith Mungall, other name Ashton.
It's how the SP search engines and indexes work. For example what I got for Agnes was:
Year - 2001
Surname - Mungall
Forename - Agnes Robertson
Mother's surname - Monteith
Other Surnames - Bell
Sex - F
Age - 68
District - Bathgate
County - West Lothian

There are 12 possible offspring listed for Martha and Hugh in West Lothian, including the 4 mentioned
Martha was b. 1921 in Linlithgow
Robina was b. 1923 in Linlithgow
Andrew was b. 1928 in West Calder
Agnes was b. in 1933 in Blackridge
3 sons with same name, so maybe the first two died or Hugh had brothers - 1924 1925 1931
2 daughters with the same name - 1920 and 1928
I can't put them on here because they might be still living but will send them via PM

Monty, the Mungall's were farmers, east of Glasgow, Gartcraig Farm, beside Barlinnie was one farm they had. I was once caught there purloining a neep for a lantern! There is a district in Falkirk called Mungall, possibly that's where the name originates.....Skoosh.

Hi Skoosh
They might well have been at one stage but this Hugh's father was a bricklayer and Hugh was a coal miner, living Linlithgow

If you can read on a Tartan background, this site has something on the origins:

Hi everyone
Using IGI I've now managed to trace the MUNGALL / M'GALL family back to the late 1700's.
Skoosh - I agree with Gadget - the farm may belong to a relative but the folks I'm interested in were miners.
Thank you everyone, especially Gadget, for the fantastic help I've received.

Of interest, there's a picture of Mungall's Farm at Gartcraig Road on the Cranhill Arts Project website. :)
