Title: Trying to find Jean Forrest
Post by: wildheart83 on Sunday 16 May 10 09:26 BST (UK)
I have been trying to find out more information on my grandfather's siblings, each born between 1908 and 1924, but there seems to be one birth record missing. Jean (Jeannie) Forrest was born in June 1909, and according to ancestry.co.uk died in the south of England in 2002, but there doesn't appear to be any record of her birth in Scotland despite being the second eldest of 10 in the family.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can look other than Scotland's People as I have been to the research place in Edinburgh and cannot find any information on her, and have searched online too.
Any help is gratefully received.

Hi

Where abouts in Scotland was she born? Also, have you tried using Jane and other alternatives to Jeanie in your searches?

I've found quite a few Jeanie/Jane, Etc. For*ests  born 1909 but I'm  uncertain of the area.

Added - just looked at you previous postings - it would be Kirkintilloch

Welcome to rootschat wildheart.

A few thoughts:

Are you sure she was born in Scotland?

Do you know the names of her parents and when they married?

I am wondering if she was born before her parents married. Have you checked for possible births under her mother's maiden surname? Sorry, ignore that, I misread that Jean was eldest rather than second eldest.  :-[

In addition to the above - have you found the births of her siblings - especially the older one?

 :)

Her elder brother and younger sister are listed (1908 and 1910)  so :

1. Maybe she wasn't born Kirkintilloch
2. Maybe she has been  wrongly indexed - what other letter looks like an F

Hi,

The only one still alive is Margaret (Peggy) who, unfortunately isn't well enough to talk to about all this.
I have the birth certificate, or have viewed the birth certificate for every other sibling except Jean. I've searched for J Forrest, since I now know her year of birth but still not finding anything.

I don't know for sure, but i'm guessing she was born in Kirkintilloch as all others were born there too, but have searched for all of Scotland just in case.

Parents were James and Margaret, married in 1907.

I tried writing a nice copperplate style F and, including 'flouishes'  ;D, came up with this list:
S?
L?
T?
Z?
E?

There may be others.  ;)

Hi Ruskie

I did a search on  *rest  J  to avoid the F and still too many come up to really be sure - none in Kirkintilloch and no other females  there before Grace (leaving first name blank).

No female Reid's either (I thought maybe a daughter of mother's sibling).

Very tricky without going laboriously and expensively  through the list   :(

Maybe the 1911 census will come up with an answer

Um, very frustrating ...  :(

How long till the 1911?  :-\

Maybe she was adopted?  :-\

From what I know about the family, Grace wasn't the sister of Charles, Jean etc, she was in fact the aunt of them all so it puts Jean after Charles and before the first James to be born in 1911.

However, she wasn't adopted as far as we are aware as the details from her death certificate give month and year of birth as June 1909.

Another thought I had was that Grace and Jean were in fact the same person, but looking at Grace's marriage and death records seem to disprove it.

Where did Jeannie's mother's family live - maybe Margaret went to have the baby with her family.

Both Margaret and James's family were from the Kirkintilloch / Kilsyth area, and were listed as being from Twechar at the time of their marriage

Cant help find Jean(nie) but am interested in the Forrest / Kirkintilloch connection.

I have all pre 1855 Forrest birth and marriage records from Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire that are recorded on Scotlands People.

If you can get the Forrest line back to pre 1855, I'll check what I have - might save you a few pennies.

I believe I have all Stirlingshire names on my site.  Dunbartonshire, I have still to input.

James Forrest c1884 m Margaret Hodge c1888 in 1907
Charles Forrest c1857 m Elizabeth Hart c1865 m 1884
Charles parents shown on 1884 marriage as James Forrest and Elizabeth Forrest

I think i've gone back as far as yourself on the Forrest line to 1855, but I think i'm complicating matters further by also looking at siblings of each person I find

Jeannie married a Charles Ebdon, i'm unsure as to when (I'm guessing it was before 1938) but it was in the south of England - Portsmouth / Plymouth / Southampton area we think

Excellent thank you, that's really helped me a lot! There was such an age gap between my grandfather and his older brothers and sister that we don't know much about them at all

Hi Gadget, It's a while since I've been active on RC.  Not had time.  Still don't really.  Just that the name Forrest jumped out at me.

Wildheart, Forrest is my family name and I have my lineage back to 1750 in Kirkintilloch.  I don't think I do have the later details you are looking for - what I was meaning was that the further back you go, I might be able to link it to some of the Forrest info I have.  I have details of 600+ Forrests in Stirlingshire and Glasgow on my site and a database of Dunbartonshire Forrests that I have still to upload.

There is a link to my site at the bottom of my threads.  If you request an invite, I'll allow you access.

Dave

Ahhhh I see, Forrest is my mother's maiden name and they seem to all have originated from the Kirkintilloch, Twechar, Kilsyth area but I haven't gone much further back to see where it traces back to, I just wondered if you were related to any of my grandfather's siblings

Have given you access.  If you have any questions, just let me know.  I'll reply as quickly as I can.
On the other hand, if you can add anything to the site, I'd appreciate it.
In addition to the info on the site, I have the SP images for all the pre 1855 stuff (Forrest only).
