Title: Laptop wouldn't type anything!
Post by: silvery on Saturday 15 May 10 21:39 BST (UK)
What happened?
I was away from it for about an hour, and when I came back it wouldn't type anything, either with the mouse or with the separate mouse.
It's new, not expensive - HP Compaq presario cq61.    I re-started it and all seems fine, but I wondered what it was.

Mine went like that once ....... at a standstill.     I thought it was the batteries, changed them, but still at a standstill.

I will be curious to know as well.

Cheers

PS:  Mine is the same brand

I don't know much about laptops my two sons have one so i know a bit :) Maybe if your using batteries instead of plugging it into the mains. It switches off automatically when not used ,to save the batteries.

Mine is always plugged into mains.

It is strange, because the same thing happened on PC, cordless keyboard wouldn't type ??? and yes, new batteries were put in, and still didn't work.

No Celia, it didn't switch off.  The keyboard stopped working.  It stopped typing anything   Although the mouse pointer still worked.  It was plugged into the mains and didn't switch off.

You could try and remove all power saving options. If that solves the problem you can re-introduce them one at a time until you find the optimal settings you are happy with. Also look at the hibernation settings.

If it isn't the power settings you should check for update drivers, and if that doesn't fix it report it to the seller. On warranties custom and practice is that if it is goes wrong before it is six months old it was faulty when bought, so you can get your money back. Between six months and the end of the warranty the seller has the right to either fix it or replace it.

It wasn't a power problem.  The laptop was still on and powered by the mains.  The keyboard stopped working. It wouldn't type anything.

thanks for the answers.

Thank you Ken, looked at my power plug on the task bar, and got the yellow warning box about performance, so have put it to HP Recommendation setting.

I have the same problem with my desk top. In my case it is caused by the keyboard drivers not unloading during sleep. Try going into the control panel key board setting and see if you have a code 30 error. If you have that is the problem. I can not found a cure for it so I have disabled sleep in the power settings.

That's interesting, Dave.  I left the lappy so it may have gone to sleep or possibly hibernated.
I've looked in control panel/keyboard and nothing indicates an error.
May be different with desktop/laptop - don't know.   It is working again now.  I closed the pc, but the indicator lights didn't go out ?  So forced the off/on by holding switch down.     I'm not a happy bunny.   My poor old last laptop was nine years old, and none of this.

(Think is - I've only had it about a week, and I've forgotten where I've put receipt!   >:(  aaargh )

Kiwi, is yours working again yet?

Silvery, running a bit better since I changed the Power Settings.  If it hadn't been for your thread I wouldn't have realised and when I think on it, things started changing on here, when daughter borrowed the lappy for the day.

I've had a similar problem in the past. Disconnecting it at the mains and removing the battery solved the problem.
