Hi, i'm looking for info on the Wood boat family.
I posted on the last thread and got some info but there are a few gaps between 1790- about 1870.
Help please, anybody.
Thanks
-
Ooh, also...
I saw somebody on the last thread that mentioned a Lois Daniels (born 1792) who was the 2nd wife of Thomas Wood.
I wondered if anyone had anything on those two as that's where the biggest gap is.
Thanks again

Hi Kerry,
I am new to this board and was directed to this thread from the beginners board, I have found these relatives on the 1901 census, my grandfather and great grandfather and mother, plus relatives living on a canal barge, as he was the captain would there be any way of tracing the name of his boat? any information would be of great help......Many thanks in advance.
Thomas Jones, barge captain born 1850 Tipton Staffs
Elizabeth Jones, wife............1861 Derby
Sarah Ann Jones, daughter........1885 Spon Lane Warwicks
Thomas Jones, son................1887 Platt Lane Shrops
Hanna Jones, daughter............1891 Elsmere Port Lancs
Henry Jones, son (my grandfather)1895 Barton Cheshire
At the time of the 1901 census they were moored in Warwick, at either Emscale or Elmseale wharf. by the 1911 census captain Thomas was deceased and the family had taken up residence in Rochdale Lancs where I still live.
Thanks......paul

Just catching up having found this discussion (both #1 and #2).
We have "boat people" as we affectionately call them by the names of Beauchamp, Lamsden, Allen and Skinner on our tree. We know of them in the Abingdon/Oxford area, but have no idea which way they were going from there. It could have been to Coventry, to London (on the Thames) or even to Swindon.
Does this ring bells with anyone?
Thanks,
Tony

hi tony give us some names and dates and im sure we could help, skinner is in my tree somewhere

Here's a quick summary, as we currently know it ...
Edward BEAUCHAMP, who is my g-g-g-grandfather in law(!), born about 1800 in Eynsham. He married Ann Andrews in 1823. They had six children, four in Eynsham, two in Abingdon. In 1851, he was a Boatman in Oxford. In 1881, he was "formerly a boatman from Eynsham". We can't find Edward or Ann in 1861 or 1871, but we know he died in 1882 and she died in 1878 in Oxford.
Of his children, Fanny BEAUCHAMP married George ALLEN in 1851. In 1861 she was given as a bargeman's wife, living at Little Marlow with her children. George hasn't been found (yet!). In 1871 they are both at the Lock House, Culham. We've seen pictures of this around this time. Also in the house was their son George was a "Transshifter of goods" and George's brother William was a boat builder from Abingdon. We believe George (the elder) had three wives, of which Fanny was the middle one.
Another child, Edward BEAUCHAMP, born 1831, married Hannah SKINNER in 1876, and was a boatman living at Upper Fisher Row, Oxford. In 1881 he was on a Barge at Abingdon Bridge, Culham with his wife. Also on that boat were Abel and William LAMBSDEN, given as servants, but we believe they were Hannah's children by her first marriage.
The BEAUCHAMPs and SKINNERs were next door neighbours in the 1851 census.
There's probably a bit more still, but that will do for a start.
(Incidentally, I couldn't get to your website yesterday. Is it still there?)
Thanks,
Tony
-
hi tony in 1861 edward and ann are on he canal boat "ann", (next door abel skinner is on the boat abel) edward and ann are with children thomas and joseph

Thanks for your assistance, Kerry.
We've now come across, and bought, the two booklets entitled the Boat People of the Oxford Canal, published by The Eureka Partnership. These have given us lots more information - they were an excellent investment. We're also collecting other census records for canal boats in the area.
In ten days time, we're visiting Oxford for a weekend to spend a day in the Record Office and then to spend another day visiting the canal in Oxford and the surrounding area. We'll probably also visit the Thames in Abingdon or nearby.
Meanwhile, I'm still not succeeding in getting on your website, Kerry. Is it still there?
Thanks,
Tony

Here are the relevant baptisms for Thomas Jenkinson Hollinshead:
Dorothy Holyhead bap.11 Jun 1758 Thomas/Ann; Lapley, Staffordshire
Thomas Jenkinson Holinshead 18 Aug 1782 Mother Dorothy; St. Michael Penkridge, Staffordshire.
Lapley is roughly 3 miles west of Penkridge. Thomas and Ann Hollinshead had four children at Penkridge and a further son at Lapley. All three of Thomas and Anns' daughters had children whilst unwed. Thomas and Ann are my 6x great-grandparents.

Thomas Jones, barge captain born 1850 Tipton Staffs

Sarah Ann Jones, daughter........1885 Spon Lane Warwicks
Thomas Jones, son................1887 Platt Lane Shrops
Hanna Jones, daughter............1891 Elsmere Port Lancs

At the time of the 1901 census they were moored in Warwick, at either Emscale or Elmseale wharf.
The wharf at Warwick is Emscote.
If you don't already know, Spon Lane is a set of locks on the Birmingham Canal Navigations near West Bromwich (so I think has always been Staffordshire !).
Platt Lane is on the Llangollen Canal near Ellesmere.

The Beauchamp and Skinner families were quite famous 'owner boatmen' or 'number ones' on the Oxford Canal, their main cargo being coal from the Warwickshire pits around Nuneaton and Coventry carried to Banbury, Oxford, or the northern reaches of the Thames. I'm sure that if you google their names you will find more, but if you have difficulty with this, PM me for help.

Thanks so much for the info, I didn't know the exact locations and it ties in perfectly from the birth areas on various census returns I have, I have recently found out that my great grandfather was Thomas Jones and he was captain of the canal boat "BEECH" this from the marriage cert of his daughter Sarah Ann to Edward Bannister in 1907 in Wolverhampton, the Bannisters were on the canal boat "SWINDON" ......Again , many thanks for your help......Paul

Does anyone have any information on the canal boat 'Rifleman' please, operating between the West Bromwich and Potteries area in the 1870s - 1890s?
Thank you

Hi all, just wondered if anyone knew of the Tonks, my great grandmother, Nancy, I believe, came from that boat family her father was a John Tonks and her mother was a Nancy Howe and they were married at Stone in Staffordshire.
John it seems had a second wife Martha Smith (a common name I know) who came from Etruria Vale, Stoke-on-Trent.
Thanks Polly2
-
hi polly this is from the 1881 census
at Grindley Brook (Canal Boat),Whitchurch,Shropshire
John TONKS/M/23/Boatman (Barge) (Wolverhampton) with wife & 2 step ch,(Howe)
kerry
-
Well that certainly sounds promising, the wife's name is correct but where do the two step children come in ?
I thought that Martha was John's second wife I wonder if I've got Nancy and Martha the wrong way round and Martha was the first wife and the two children where her's and not Nancy's
-
the children are his stepchildren so his wife must have been married before, has their names are howe

I have been searching for Sarah Ann BATE born 1853 in Staffordshire. On both of her marriage certificates she states her father as being Thomas, a boatman. I did find a Thomas BATES on both the 1871 and 1881 Census but that is all I can find. Nothing shows up for 1861. She has always stated on marriage and birth certificates that her maiden name was BATE. Sarah also married boatmen, the first was Hugh GLOVER and the second John TONKS/TUNKS.
Any help would be most appreciative.

My original post was 29 September enquiring about birth details of Sarah Ann BATE. I was successful in finding her birth. She was born 18 Mar 1853 at The Bratch, Staffordshire. Her father was Thomas BATE, a boatman, her mother Elizabeth WRIGHT. I have since purchased their Marriage Certificate which shows they were both of full age when married. Thomas' father was James BATE, a boatman, and Elizabeth's father, Thomas WRIGHT, also a boatman. They were married on 21 Apr 1852 at the Parish Church in the Parish of Dudley in the County of Worcester.
Are there any connections to these families please?

Hi everyone
I'm new to this forum having read the original 20 page one and have now found this one.
My gg grandfather was George Edwards, born in Banbury in 1925 and working on the Oxford Canal in 1871 - census has him as captain of a boat named "Susan". He had 5 children, William George (known as George), Job, Thomas, Mary Anne (my ggrandmother) and Susannah. In 1861 he was living in Factory Street, Neithrop and is described as Boatman. His wife, Susannah Franklin, died in 1865 when their last child was born.
The two girls were sent, one each, to two of Susannah's sisters and the two older boys seemed to have joined their father on the boat. Certainly Job is with him in 1871 and son George was working as "helper" on the boat "Wild Wave" with the owner Samuel Roadright and his wife Mary and their son William, lying at his wharf in Fenny Compton.
In 1881 Job is a Lighterman on "Moscow" at Chester Castle, Cheshire.
George (father) seems to have died in 1877.
In 1891 Job is one of three crew on an unnamed boat captained by William Johnson at Church Lock, Church Lawton Cheshire.
I would be grateful for any information anyone might have linked to any of the above.
I have also be trying to access Kerry's "wonderful"website but I seem unable to get in. All I can see is a funny Wix handle on the right which doesn't seem to do anything other than bring up a bar at the bottom which says Miners, with boatmen underneath, neither of which can be accessed. What am I doing wrong?
Regards

Hello everyone....can anyone help me please ;D
I am trying to trace a Horace Nixon. He was born in 1905 in Paddington, but his family originate from Wolverhampton area. He is part of the Nixons from Stourport, who the majority were boatmen. I've found him with his family on the 1911 census, but have lost track him after that. I did find a death for a Horace in 1916, but have been subsequently told that he is remembered in the 30's, so I know that one isn't him.
Can anyone help me, I've tried everything to find him, but can't find any obvious marriage or death.
Also, I have another branch of the family who were Dulson's, and were also boat people. In particular, Jane Dulson. I have her marriage and death, which puts her birth about 1901, and she is on the 1911 census as being born in West Bromwich, but again I can't find anything.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have a couple of parish records (Christnings)from the church used by the boatmen in Brentford.
for a William & lucy Edwards children baptised on the cut on the canal boat Prosperity around late 1920 early 1930 time could they be part of your Edwards Family
-
Hello Marsaeth
Are your Nixons connected to the Nixons who settled in the Long Buckby area
-
Jane
I don't think those Edwards are mine unless they are descended from Job. I was hoping to find earlier people such as George's parents and siblings. Also whether George owned his own boat or worked for someone else.

Hi All:
Have just been reading through this thread (#2) and the previous one (#1).
The boatmen in my family have the surname NIXON. I've seen a few Nixon's through this topic, but none that I recognize. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these Staffordshire Nixons found on the 1861 census in Wolverhampton:
Thomas Nixon 55 (b 1806 - Shenstone, Staffs) - Boatman
Maria Nixon 43 (b 1818 - Stretton, Staffs)
Mary A Nixon 14 (b 1847 - Brewood, Staffs)
Anna M Nixon 13 (b 1848 - Brewood, Staffs)
Thomas Nixon 10 (b 1851 - Wolverhampton, Staffs)
William Nixon 3 (b 1859 - Wolverhampton, Staffs)
I think Thomas (b 1806) is the son of Benjamin Nixon (b ca. 1781 - Shenstone) and his wife Ann.

Hello Sami
do any of your Nixon's have the middle name of Slater? or do you have any ties with canal family's Harrison, Holt or Monk I belive these could be the next generation down from the ones you are asking about these settled in the main in Long Buckby & west Drayton Middx
-
Hi Jane:
None of the Nixon's have the middle name Slater and I don't know of any ties to the Harrison, Holt or Monk names.
I have started searching Thomas Nixon because he is the oldest brother of my 3x gt grandmother Ann Nixon. I've hit a brick wall with Ann and I wondered if I could get somewhere through Thomas. I was hoping to connect with someone who had him in their family.
I'll have to follow Thomas and his children and see where that leads.

....1861 census in Wolverhampton:
Thomas Nixon 55 (b 1806 - Shenstone, Staffs) - Boatman
Maria Nixon 43 (b 1818 - Stretton, Staffs)
Mary A Nixon 14 (b 1847 - Brewood, Staffs)
Anna M Nixon 13 (b 1848 - Brewood, Staffs)
Thomas Nixon 10 (b 1851 - Wolverhampton, Staffs)
William Nixon 3 (b 1859 - Wolverhampton, Staffs)
I've found Thomas and sons Thomas and William on the 1871 census. He (along with Thomas junior) are listed as 'Master Boat Man of the Edward Neale'
Are there any resources to search in order to get more information on the 'Edward Neale'?
