I am trying to find the name / photo of the Miners Convalescent Home in Weston Super Mare,
present in the 50's / 60's and probably before.
My Father and Grandfather both stayed there to recuperate, sent from the Cannock Chase No5 Pit
Hednesford (Locally known as 'Fives')
Any help much appreciated.

Might be worthwhile getting in touch with NUM HQ in Barnsley as these establishments were usually run by the Trade Union, it might also be useful to get in touch with the local newspaper at Weston and Somerset archives.
-
Now why did'nt I think of that? Great suggestions Redroger, will definately
try these avenues.
Thankyou so much

Goodluck!

I never knew there were miners convalescent homes. I was in a mine the other day at a museum in Durham and got to experience what it was like for my ancestors in the mines.
-
There were a number of Miner's Convalescent homes, including the one at Bispham, Blackpool.
See http://www.rossallbeach.co.uk/minershome.htm

Great initials at the front of the building MCH.

This site mentions Robert Summerside Williamson who seems to have been involved in the set up of the home, but it doesn't give the name:
http://www.ccmhs.co.uk/stories%20&%20facts_files/Williamson%20Family.htm
and this link is about convalescent and rest homes (and mentions Weston):

Hello
Just found references on the Somerset RO site
http://www1.somerset.gov.uk/archives/
which say
Plan of conversion of Allendale, 65 Beach Road, to convalescent home.
For The Cannock Chase and Pelsall Coalfield Miners' Society; (E T Gillmore) [4953] Box 28.
1924
plus other records in 1929 and 1931
so sounds as if it was called Allendale.
Good Luck

There is a miners' convalescent home here in Bournemouth, I think it was for the South Wales area. As a slight digression the NUM, in common with several other Trade Unions also ran holiday camps for their members, the Derbyshire Area had one at Skegness. In the rail industry the Convalescent Homes were run more independently, but there was a strong input from both the Management and Unions into them.

Thanks to all for your helpful replies and especially, Morganllan whose information looks
most promising. I live not to far away from Somerset RO so will go and check this out.
I usually have to travel to Staffordshire to research my family history, so this will make a
pleasant and much shorter excursion.
Thanks to all once again.

You're welcome, Alyson
Please let me know how you get on? :)

Hi .. i have just been reading about your interest in allandale miners convalescent home in Weston-Super-Mare and thought I'd drop you a quick line to tell you about the Museum of Cannock Chase in Hednesford, which is a small museum focusing on the Staffs coal mining industry - I think they have a couple of photographs of 'Allandale' which you may be interested in (I think you might be able to get copies for a small fee?!) They can be contacted by phone or email - Regards Alison
-
Thankyou so much for this hoop69, I am still looking for a photo and don't know
why I did'nt think of going to the museum, which I have already visited a few
years ago.
I am planning a visit to Staffs soon so will call in then.
Thankyou

Hi, no problem - if you want to view the photographs you would need to make an appointment with the 'collections officer' though as the research room is only open part time, kind regards Alison ps: think they are internal photographs (?) - I think thats even better than an external view from a family history point of view?!!!!!
-
I am glad you have told me this, I would have called in on spec as I drive
past there, so I will look into making an appointment before I go.
Thanks for the tip :)

Hi
Don't know whether this site is of us to you, but it's intersing
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=history+miners+convalescent+homes&hl=en&tbo=u&biw=970&bih=579&tbs=tl:1&ei=aCaqTLq2EIzG4gbvr8zyDQ&sa=X&oi=timeline_result&ct=title&resnum=11&ved=0CFAQ5wIwCg
As i understand it, miners convalescent homes were subsidized by the NUM and the British Coal Board (pre-privatisation of the coal mines). Sadly many have been sold off

I have a very good picture of Allandale Weston Super Mare and some of the patients and staff circa 1938 and 1940 if you are still interested. My Grandad was there during those years.
